Hystero epilepsy is an alleged disease discovered by 19th century French neurologist Jean Martin Charcot . ref cite web url http www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov picrender.fcgi?artid 2221928&blobtype pdf title An Account of a Demonstration on the Phenomena of Hystero Epilepsy Given by Professor Charcot author Arthur Gamgee publisher Br Med J. 1878 October 12 2 928 545 548. ref It is considered a famous example of iatrogenic artifact , or a disease created by doctors. The disease was considered a combination of hysteria and epilepsy . Charcot housed his hystero epilepsy patients in the same ward as patients with epilepsy, because both were considered episodic diseases. At the time, both hysteria and epilepsy were believed to be neuroses and diseases caused by the conversion of psychological distress into physical distress. Symptoms included convulsions, contortions, fainting, and transient impairment of consciousness. Joseph Babinski convinced Charcot that he was inducing the symptoms in his patients because of his treatment regimen. ref name spanos Spanos, Nicholas P. He started his career at the Charit Hospital in Berlin as an assistant of Karl Friedrich Otto Westphal Karl Westphal . In 1891 Oppenheim opened a successful private hospital in Berlin. Oppenheim wrote a book about nervous diseases in 1894 titled Lehrbuch der Nervenkrankheiten f r rzte und Studierende , which soon became a standard in his profession. It was published in several editions, and is considered one of the best textbooks on neurology ever written. He also published important works on tabes dorsalis , alcoholism , anterior poliomyelitis , syphilis , multiple sclerosis and traumatic neurosis . In 1889 he published a treatise on traumatic neuroses that was harshly criticized by eminent physicians such as Jean Martin Charcot 1825 1893 and Max Nonne 1861 1959 , which was due to Oppenheim claiming that psychological trauma caused organic changes which perpetuated psychic neuroses. In the field of physiology he published articles on metabolism of urea with the aid of Nathan Zuntz 1847 1920 . His expertise involving brain disease led directly to the first successful removal of a brain tumor , which was performed by R. Unreferenced date March 2009 The Memoirs of an Amnesiac is the autobiography of composer , radio, and television personality Oscar Levant . Published in 1965 by G. P. Putnam s Sons , it was Levant s second best seller, following a quarter century after his first book, A Smattering of Ignorance . Levant intersperses his reminisces about Hollywood in its heyday with one liners and pithy quotes by himself and others. When asked about writing a book on Victor Herbert by a publisher, for example, Levant remarked I wouldn t even read one Dorothy Parker , when Levant asked her if she ever took barbiturates sleeping pills , supposedly answered, In a big bowl with sugar and cream. Witty, acerbic, and often self deprecating, the book casually drops scores of famous names such as Levant s good friend George Gershwin , Arturo Toscanini , Otto Klemperer , William Faulkner , Harpo Marx , Irving Berlin , and Joseph P. It serves as both a Who s Who of Hollywood over three decades skewering fellow musicians, actors, conducting conductors , politician s, and gangster s and a harrowing personal tale of neurosis neuroses and obsessions . Aphanisis is the psychology psychological term used to denote the disappearance of sex ual desire. ref name ODP cite book title Oxford Dictionary of Psychology publisher Oxford University Press year 2003 isbn 0 19 860761 X page 47 ref It comes from the Greek aphanes , meaning invisible . According to the theories of Ernest Jones , who coined the term in 1927, ref name ODP aphanisis is the foundation of all neurosis neuroses . Aphanisis is an important concept in Lacanian psychoanalysis cf. The Four Fundamental Concepts of Psychoanalysis , although, following Jones, Lacan appropriated and altered the term s meaning somewhat substantially. In Lacanian theory, aphanisis describes the process through which a subject is eclipsed behind any signifier used to conceive of her. The subject as such is, accordingly, barred, a mere interstice the signifier reigns supreme. Barred and riven by the Other of language , a subject has no choice but to conceive of herself vis a vis something other than herself, something outside or radically separated from her. In this very process of conceiving of herself, of making herself thinkable, and thus communicable, a subject accomplishes her own radical alienation. Because the Other is the sole means through which a subject can be rendered thinkable, aphanisis, the disappearance or the fading of the subject behind any signifier used to conceive of it, is an essential concept for understanding subjectivity and the peril of the subject s fundamental emptiness. morefootnotes date January 2010 Introduction to Psychoanalysis Vorlesungen zur Einf hrung in die Psychoanalyse is one of the most famous works of Sigmund Freud , calculated for a wide readership. In its first part from 1st to 28th lecture Freud enthusiastically outlines his approach to the unconscious, dreams, the theory of neuroses and some technical issues in the form in which it was formulated at the time of reading the lectures in Vienna in 1916 1917. From some positions outlined here Freud subsequently refused, many supplements and develops or revises in his later works. The second part new lecture series, from 29th to 35th has never been read before to public, it features a different style of presentation, sometimes requiring the reader to training, sometimes polemical. This work offers the reader acquainted with the concepts of Freud, to trace the logic of his arguments and to join his conclusions. The form of Lectures Freud allows lively polemical, is constantly engaging the reader in a discussion to justify their views, back them up with examples from life and from clinical practice, to identify not clarifying and weaknesses of the theory needs further elaboration. According to the preface blockquote These twenty eight lectures to laymen are elementary and almost conversational. Freud sets forth with a frankness almost startling the difficulties and limitations of psychoanalysis , and also describes its main methods and results as only a master and originator of a new school of thought can do. It draws its inspiration by Louise Kaplan s book of the same name. Plot Dresses, lipsticks, sex the perversions and neuroses of Eve Stephens, a young, very successful lawyer. Her days are a tightrope act between extreme eloquence and frosty toughness on the one side, and scaring vulnerability on the other. The climax of her career shall be the possibly forthcoming appointment as a judge, but this step seems to be interrupted by her kleptomanian sister Mad who is arrested after one of her raids. Eve travels to Mad s town to stand by her in the jail. Their struggle about Mad s illness evokes suppressed conflicts. Eve stays at her sister s flat where she meets a girl that fights with her budding femininity. This movie shows a woman clearly struggling with her sexuality and the gender role she fulfills as a woman. Wrestling with her sexuality, she feels the need to mask herself from society, limited by the social conformity expected of all women. She is driven by the need to feel beautiful and normal, and because of what she believes society expects of her, has trouble accepting herself.
