The museum moved to this building in 1973. The museum is dedicated to maritime history and contains many artifacts associated with shipping and sailing . The collection contains, among other things, paintings, scale models, weapons and world maps. The map collection includes works by famed 17th century cartographers Willem Blaeu and his son Joan Blaeu . The museum also has a surviving copy of the first edition of Maximilianus Transylvanus Maximilian Transylvanus work, De Moluccis Insulis , the first to describe Ferdinand Magellan Ferdinand Magellan s voyage around the world. History The museum was established in 1927 and was initially located in one of the main buildings of the Nederlandse Spoorwegen Dutch National Railroad in Utrecht city Utrecht . At that time, the collection consisted mostly of pictures, documents, and small objects. In the 1930s the first steps were taken to conserve old historically significant rail equipment. A portion of this collection was lost during World War II . The Maliebaan station The collection was briefly located in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam , but in the 1950s the museum was moved back to Utrecht. The Maliebaan station, which was closed in 1939, was found to be a suitable site. The building was remodeled, and in 1954 the museum reopened there. The Nederlands Blazers Ensemble Netherlands Wind Ensemble, NBE comprises musicians from all the major Dutch symphony orchestras. Playing together for the sheer joy of it, the NBE s twenty or so members winds, horns, percussion and double bass meet up around fifty times per year to perform special programmes both in the Netherlands and abroad. The ensemble is famous for its high level of performance and its unique and adventurous programming. Categorisations such as classical or contemporary are too narrow for their programmes, but one element they all share is a sense of the theatrical. The NBE is regularly featured in special concert series at Amsterdam s main venues the Concertgebouw , Paradiso and the new Muziekgebouw aan t IJ . History The ensemble was founded in 1959 by Thom de Klerk 1912 1966 , principal bassoonist of the Concertgebouw Orchestra who had formed a student wind quintet at the Amsterdam Conservatory Martine Bakker flute , Edo de Waart oboe , George Pieterson clarinet , Joep Terwey bassoon and Jaap Verhaar horn , De Klerk wanted to expand the group in order to perform wind serenades like those by Mozart , Dvorak and Gounod , and ambitiously aimed to make the ensemble into the I Musici for winds.
