The fellowship provides an honorarium of 10,500 to be placed towards the cost of tuition and fees at the university the fellow attends it also awards the student directly with an annual 30,000 stipend over three years. Each recipient can also apply for a one time only travel award for 1,000. This travel award was previously for international research activities or presenting at an international scientific conference. However, in 2010, this opportunity was converted to the Nordic Research Opportunity, which is intended to facilitate collaborations between U.S. graduate fellows and scholars at Finnish, Swedish, Danish, and Norwegian research institutions. The Graduate Research Fellowship was first awarded in 1952, with the goal of encouraging basic scientific research and ensuring comprehensive, competitive research programs for U.S. students. Since 1952, the NSF has funded over 46,500 Graduate Research Fellowships out of over 500,000 applicants. Many former graduate fellows have gone on to become Nobel laureates and members of the National Academy of Sciences . ref cite web last National Science Foundation title GRF History url http www.nsfgrfp.org about the program history ref In order to apply, the applicant must submit biographical information, undergraduate and graduate transcripts where applicable, at least three letters of recommendation, and three essays a personal statement, a statement of previous research, and a research proposal. 1. Gaussian random field

Context date September 2011 A Gaussian random field GRF is a random field involving multivariate normal distribution Gaussian probability density functions of the variables. A one dimensional GRF is also called a Gaussian process . One way of constructing a GRF is by assuming that the field is the sum of a large number of plane, cylindrical or spherical waves with uniformly distributed random phase. Where applicable, the central limit theorem dictates that at any point, the sum of these individual plane wave contributions will exhibit a Gaussian distribution. This type of GRF is completely described by its power spectral density , and hence, through the Wiener Khinchin theorem , by its two point autocorrelation function , which is related to the power spectral densisty through a Fourier transformation. Citation needed date September 2011 With regard to applications of GRFs, the initial conditions of physical cosmology generated by quantum fluctuation quantum mechanical fluctuations during cosmic inflation are thought to be a GRF with a nearly scale invariant spectrum. ref Peacock, John. Cosmological Physics , Cambridge University Press, 1999. ISBN 052141072X Page needed date September 2011 ref Suppose f x is the value of a GRF at a point x in some D dimensional space. If we make a vector of the values of f at N points, x sub 1 sub ,  ...,  x sub N sub , in the D dimensional space, then the vector f x sub 1 sub ,  ...,  f x sub N sub will always be distributed as a multivariate Gaussian. An important special case of a GRF is the Gaussian free field . Citation needed date September 2011 References reflist Category Spatial processes probability stub ...   more details
