The third 1978 All Africa Games All Africa Games were held in July 1978 in Algiers , Algeria . New events were added to the athletics sport athletics program Decathlon and pentathlon , for men and women respectively, as well as men s race walking 20 km road walk . Three nations also won their first medals at these championships these being Tunisia , Sudan and Republic of Upper Volta Upper Volta . Malian discus thrower Namakoro Niar won his third title, being the only athlete to do so. The fourth 1987 All Africa Games All Africa Games were held in August 1987 in Nairobi , Kenya . Four new events were added to the games these were the women s 3000 metres , 10000 metres , 400 metres hurdles and Racewalking 5000 metres track walk . Additionally the pentathlon for women was replaced with the heptathlon . Also four nations won medals for the first time in athletics at the All Africa Games.
