  1. National mysticism

Merge Historiography and nationalism date August 2008 National mysticism German Nationalmystik is a form of nationalism which raises the nation to the status of numen or divinity . Its best known instance is Germanic mysticism , which gave rise to Nazi mysticism under the Third Reich . The idea of the nation as a divine entity was presented by Johann Gottlieb Fichte . National mysticism is closely related to Romantic nationalism , but goes beyond the expounding of romantic sentiment, to the mysticist veneration of the nation as a transcendent truth. It often intersects with ethnic nationalism by pseudohistorical assertions about the origins of a given ethnicity . National mysticism is encountered in many nationalisms other than Germanic or Nazi mysticism, and expresses itself in the use of occult , pseudoscientific , or pseudohistorical beliefs to back up nationalistic claims, often involving unrealistic notions of the antiquity of a nation antiquity frenzy or any national myth defended as true by pseudo scholarly means. The Professor s House, New York Knopf, 1925 ref Underhill s practical mysticism is secular rather than religious since it is a natural human activity. ref name underhill Underhill, Evelyn. Mysticism, New York Meridian Books, 1911 ref Underhil defines her meaning of Practical Mysticism in the following paragraph cquote Therefore it is to a practical mysticism that the practical man is here invited to a training of his latent faculties, a bracing and brightening of his languid consciousness, an emancipation from the fetters of appearance, a turning of his attention to new levels of the world. Thus he may become aware of the universe that the spiritual artist is always trying to disclose to the race. This amount of mystical perception this ordinary contemplation , as the specialist call it, is possible to all men without it, they are not wholly alive. 1. German mysticism

No footnotes date April 2009 Not to be confused with the 19th century occultist Germanic mysticism . German mysticism , sometimes called Dominican mysticism or Rhineland mysticism , was a Late Middle Ages late medieval Christian mysticism Christian mystical movement, that was especially prominent within the Dominican order and in Germany . Although its origins can be traced back to Hildegard of Bingen , it is mostly represented by Meister Eckhart , Johannes Tauler , and Henry Suso . Other notable figures include Rulman Merswin and Margaretha Ebner , and the Friends of God . This movement often seems to stand in stark contrast with scholasticism and German Theology, but the relationship between scholasticism and German mysticism is debated. Viewed as a predecessor of the reformation, the contrast becomes very apparent. For example, the use of an approachable vernacular stands in stark contrast to the constrained Latin of the Scholastics, the increased focus on the laity stands in contrast to the more deeply sacramental understanding of the Church, and these elements are both taken up and transformed in the Martin Luther resources writings of Martin Luther . German mysticism can also be viewed as a practical application of Scholasticism. Though Meister Eckhart is most well known for his popular German sermons, he also wrote a lengthy philosophical exposition of the same teachings in Latin. Some scholars have read him as a rather orthodox Thomist, seeing his mysticism as flowing naturally from established teachings through Eckhart s own idiosyncrasies and exaggerations.
