  1. Address munging

Address munging is the practice of disguising, or munge munging , an e mail address to prevent it being automatically collected and used as a target for people and organizations who send e mail spam unsolicited bulk e mail . Address munging is intended to disguise an e mail address in a way that prevents computer software seeing the real address, or even any address at all, but still allows a human reader to reconstruct the original and contact the author an email address such as, nowiki no one example.com nowiki , becomes no one at example dot com , for instance. I will feel incredibly stupid if I find that it s not wikified in the first place, but it s simply my FF extension linkification that is turning it into a mailto link. Any e mail address posted in public is likely to be automatically collected by computer software used by bulk emailers a process known as e mail address harvesting and addresses posted on webpage s, Usenet or chat rooms are particularly vulnerable to this. ref http ... users. ref http www.interhack.net pubs munging harmful Address Munging Considered Harmful , Matt Curtin ref The use of address munging on Usenet is contrary to the recommendations of RFC 1036 governing ... that would have been deterred by address munging may instead end up wasting time on long letters ... exactly the same deterrent problems as address munging itself. 1. Mung (computer term)

Mung is computer jargon for to make repeated changes which individually may be reversible, yet which ultimately result in an unintentional, irreversible destruction of large portions of the original item. It was coined in 1958 in the Tech Model Railroad Club at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology . In 1960 the backronym Mash Until No Good was created to describe Mung, and a while after it was revised to Mung Until No Good , making it one of the first recursive acronym s. It lived on as a recursive command in the editing language Text Editor and Corrector TECO . Munging implies destruction to make large scale and irrevocable changes to a file and to destroy it. Hence in the early text adventure game Zork , also known as Dungeon, the user could mung an object and thereby destroy it making it impossible to finish the game if the object was an important item . Munging may also describe the constructive operation of tying together systems and interfaces that were not specifically designed to interoperate often using the Perl programming language . Munging can also describe the processing or filtering of raw data into another form. ref cite web url http books.perl.org book 95 title Perl Books Book Data Munging with Perl work Perl.org accessdate December 30, 2010 ref See also Munge &ndash to create a strong, secure password through character substitution. 1. List poisoning

The term list poisoning as related to electronic mail e mail , refers to poisoning a mailing list with invalid e mail addresses. Industry uses Once a mailing list has been poisoned with a number of invalid e mail addresses, the resources required to send a message to this list has increased, even though the number of valid recipients has not. If one can poison a spammer s mailing list, one can force the spammer to exhaust more resources to send e mail, in theory costing the spammer money and time. Poisoning spammer s mailing lists is usually done by blacklists submitting fake information to email submit style offers, or by posting invalid email addresses in a Usenet forum or on a web page where spammers are believed to harvest email addresses for their mailing lists. Vulnerabilities Syntactically invalid email addresses used to poison a mailing list could be easily filtered out by the spammers, while using email addresses that are syntactically correct could cause problems for the mail server responsible for the email address. Implementations of spam poisoning systems can be avoided, if spammers learn of their location e. g., they could automatically filter out any address containing spampoison.com . Spammers often steal resources so that the efficiency of a mailing places little financial burden on the spammer. Implementations List poisoning http www.monkeys.com wpoison code written in Perl . Included with the map editor are various assets, including sides and shipped maps, as well as the source files for the downloadable Tatooine Jabba The Hutt Jabba s Palace . Sound effects and music used to make the two Star Wars Battlefront games were not included because of copyright issues ref BFBuilder ReadMe ref , although it is possible to import original music and sound effects into the game. Map editing is done through an application called Zero Editor , which is used to mold the landscapes, place objects, command posts and vehicle spawn points. Additional scripting is done through LUA files for maps, and ODF Object Definition Files files for objects. Levels are finalized by a process called munging not to be confused with Munge , which compiles assets and maps into files recognised by the game, before compiling those files into LVL files which the game can read. Although the two engines are subtly different, assets can be imported from the first into the second, and vice versa. 1. Spambot

Multiple issues weasel March 2009 refimprove January 2011 A spambot is an automated computer program designed to assist in the sending of Spam electronic spam . Spambots usually create fake accounts and send spam using them, although it would be obvious that a spambot is sending it. Some spambots, however, can crack passwords and send spam using other people s accounts. E mail spambots Citations missing section date March 2011 main E mail address harvesting E mail spambots harvest e mail addresses from material found on the Internet in order to build mailing lists for sending unsolicited e mail, also known as e mail spam spam . Such spambots are web crawler s that can gather e mail addresses from Web sites, newsgroups, special interest group SIG postings, and chat room conversations. Because e mail addresses have a distinctive format, spambots are easy to write. A number of programs and approaches have been devised to foil spambots. One such technique is address munging , in which an e mail address is deliberately modified so that a human reader and or human controlled Web browser can interpret it but spambots cannot. This has led to the evolution of more sophisticated spambots that are able to recover e mail addresses from character strings that appear to be munged, or instead can render the text into a web browser and then Screen scraping scrape it for e mail addresses. address munging Alternatives Alternative transparent techniques include displaying all or part of the e mail address on a webpage as an image, a text logo shrunken to normal size using inline CSS , or as text with the order of characters jumbled, placed into readable order at display time using CSS. Forum spambots Citations missing section date March 2011 Main forum spam Forum spambots surf the web, looking for guestbooks , wiki s, blog s, Internet forum forums and other types of Form web web forms which it can then use to submit bogus content.
