  1. Mountaineering boots

refimprove date September 2009 Image Bergschuh Leder um 1982.jpg thumb 300px Leather boot 1982 Mountaineering boots are a type of footwear used in the extreme sport sport of mountain climbing . They are designed specifically for moving over harsh terrain. Design Not to be confused with hiking boots , mountaineering boots are usually taller, stiffer, and insulated. The boots can be made of leather , plastic , or modern synthetic materials like Kevlar . The extra height and stiffness of mountaineering boots helps support the climber in steep terrain where flexible boots could cause unsure footing and possibly result in a fall. This extra stiffness is traditionally achieved through the use of a full steel Shank footwear shank , though some manufacturers have begun to use carbon fiber to create the necessary stiffness. File Mountaineering Boot Ad, 1911.jpg thumb left upright Mountaineering boots from 1911 Mountaineering boots are typically designed to be used with crampons . To achieve compatibility with crampons, welts are molded into the toe and heel of the boot, providing a platform for the crampon to attach to. The stiffness of the boot enhances the precision of the crampon and allows a climber to pursue steeper and more difficult terrain. Another important aspect of mountaineering boots is warmth. To prevent frostbite in extreme cold conditions, synthetic insulation is incorporated into the boot. Lighter weight boots are classified as single boots. These single boots are insulated as a single unit with the insulation being permanently attached to the rest of the boot. Double boots, another classification, typically consist of a non insulated shell with a removable insulated ... boots, they are not ideally suited for multi day cold weather excursions. 1. Nehru Institute of Mountaineering

Unreferenced date May 2008 The Nehru Institute of Mountaineering NIM is rated as one of the best mountaineering institutes in India and also considered a prestigious mountaineering institute in Asia. History The proposal to have a mountaineering Institute at Uttarkashi was mooted by the Ministry of Defence, Government of India and the Government of Uttar Pradesh in 1964. Uttarkashi was specially selected as the home of NIM, primarily because of its close proximity to the Gangotri region in western Garhwal division Garhwal , which undoubtedly has the best climbing and training potential in India and perhaps in the world. Perched beautifully on the turtle back hill across the east bank of river Bhagirathi , the Institute overlooks the sacred town of Uttarkashi and the confluence of Indravati with the Bhagirathi. In a historic development in November 2001, with the newly formed State of Uttarakhand coming into existence, the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand became the Vice President of the Institute. The Institute was fortunate to receive patronage from the highest level since its inception from the Government of India, the government of Uttar Pradesh and now, the Government of Uttarakhand. The found fathers in Shri Y.B.Chauhan, then the Hon ble Defence Minister of India and founder President NIM and Smt Sucheta Kriplani then the Hon ble Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and founder Vice Prisident NIM, gave their unstinted support to the Institute. Brigadier Gyan Singh the first Principal of NIM with his wide experience gave a very strong footing to the Institute and nurtured it through its formative years. Late Shri H C Sarin, who was secretary NIM for 22 long years, ensured that the Institute had all the bureaucratic support and the facilities needed for a premier national Institute ....
