Marathon mountainbike races , often referred to as cross country marathon XCM , are a very demanding form of mountainbike races covering at least 40 kilometers usually in mountainous terrain. Events held in Europe are typically just a little longer than the average cross country mountainbike race. Marathon events in the USA and Canada are typically longer than 100 kilometers and are very different from cross country races. UCI events The Union Cycliste Internationale UCI has established a championship series for such events, the Marathon World Cup. The UCI rules limit events to distances between 40  km 24.9 miles and 120  km 74.5 miles and for 2006 limits event to New Zealand , Hungary , Germany , Switzerland , Italy , France and the Netherlands . Almost all of the parcipitants are elite professional mountainbike racers. There is an annual world championship event, the UCI MountainBike Marathon World Championships . Non UCI events Non UCI events routinely cover much longer distances. The typical event in the USA is either based on time, usually 6, 12 or 24 hours, or distance, the most common being 100 miles 161  km Events based on hours typically allow either people to compete individually or as part of the team. Aston Hill hosts popular races, bike demo days and training events on various days of the year. Buckingham Bikes took over the running Aston Hill MountainBike Area as of Friday 6 April 2007 after the previous five year agreement with the Forestry Commission expired. This followed Ian Warby s appointment to the Cyclists Touring Club CTC as their new Off Road Development Officer, having spent the previous 10 years developing Aston Hill. Buckingham Bikes failed to manage the site for more than a few months and at the end of 2007 the gates were permanently locked. Negotiations between a new local group of riders and the Forestry Commission to reopen the park took place and the centre initially reopened to the public for use at the weekends and during school holidays. A new website has since been launched at http www.rideastonhill.co.uk www.rideastonhill.co.uk to promote the site and its partnering with the CTC and Forestry Commission. The future is looking more positive after a successful preliminary downhill race on the popular Black Run in March 2009, the development of the new 4 2 3 track and consequential Southern Championships race in September 2009, and another race on the Black Run in March 2010 ... orphan date June 2010 Refimprove date December 2009 The Trans Sylvania MountainBike Epic is a mountain bicycle stage race in Pennsylvania . The event is seven days in length and features the rocky, mountainous terrain of central Pennsylvania s multi use trails. Name Also known as TransSylvania Epic Transylvania Epic TSE The name Trans Sylvania is a reference to other mountainbike stage races such as Transrockies TransRockies and http www.bike transalp.de TransAlp . The Trans Sylvania Epic differs from these events in that it is based out of a central location whereas TransRockies and TransAlp are a continuous route between encampments and towns. The central location of the base camp relative to the course routes allows for minimal packing, transport, and travel for participants and staff. Also, compared to other mountainbike stage races, Trans Sylvania s courses are designed to appeal to a broad spectrum of ability levels instead of catering strictly to upper level racers. The inaugural running of the event was May 30 June, 2010 and it s base camp location is the Seven Mountains Boy Scout Camp just southeast of State College, Pennsylvania. The 2011 Trans Sylvania Epic will be held May 29 June 4, 2011. The base camp location will be the same, and the courses will be modified versions of the 2010 courses.
