  1. Lot (Sodom)

Lot Hebrew or Lut Arabic is a figure appearing, in various Abrahamic religious writings, as the leader of a small party who escape the divine destruction of the city of Sodom and Gomorrah Sodom . Common elements The two core sources on Lot are the Hebrew Book of Genesis and the Qur an . Both describe him as a religiously observant, monotheism monotheist nephew of the patriarch Abraham or Abram in ancient Canaan , and as relocating to Sodom. There he takes into his home several angels. He refuses the demands of large numbers of other residents that the visitors leave the house with them he eventually offers to send his own daughters out instead, but the demand continues to be for the visitors. The Koranic account is explicit in identifying the mob s intentions as coerced sex between males, and while the Genesis one relies on the expression know them , it generally is construed similarly. The angels disclose to Lot that God is about to destroy the city and its inhabitants, and he leaves it at their urging with most of his dependents. His wife, however, perishes in or near the city due to her lesser zeal. Major versions of the Lot narrative An Islamic view of Lot supplements the Koranic account with other Islamic narratives concerning Lot and his relatives, and by non scriptural commentaries. Judeo Christian views of Lot reflect most scripturally oriented Christians acceptance of the Genesis narrative Jewish and Christian commentaries on it are generally drawn on by only the corresponding religion s adherents, and the sparse New Testament scriptural references to Lot are similarly matters of little Jewish interest. 1. Socrates (Voltaire)

Unreferenced date October 2011 Socrates , written by Voltaire , the famous French philosopher in the mid 17th Century, is a play in three acts that concerns itself with Socrates and the events just before his death during his Socrates Trial and death trial . It is heavy with satire specifically at government authority and organized religion. The main characters besides the titular role is that of the priest Anitus , his entourage, Xantippe Socrates wife Xantippe , several judges, and some children Socrates has adopted as his own. Like more historical accounts by Herodotus , Plato , and Xenophon , the playwright shows Socrates as a moral individual charged with baseless accusations by a conspiracy of corrupt Ancient Athens Athenians or Athenian democracy Athenian officials although Voltaire implies that the wrongdoers are a select few. Unlike the historical account, Socrates deals with several judges, whereas his real life counterpart receives his punishment of death by hemlock by a jury of 500 Athenians. The presence or mention of Socrates most well known students such as Plato , Antisthenes , Zeno of Citium , and others are replaced by unnamed disciples, delivering only a few token lines at the end of the play. Socrates is also portrayed as a monotheist and a victim of religious persecution, an interpretation that is not generally shared by modern scholars and historians. Generally, this is not the most well known of his works in comparison with Letters on the English which Voltaire published in 1778 or the Dictionnaire philosophique published earlier in 1764. However, hints of his contempt for government and religion are apparent here which later influenced leaders in the Founding Fathers of the United States American Revolution and the French Revolution . The book consists of three parts and is an extension of Freud s work on psychoanalytic theory as a means of generating hypotheses about historical events. Freud had similarly employed psychoanalytic theory to history in his much earlier work, Totem and Taboo . As well as in his ever expanding library on the subject, Freud s interest in Egypt manifested itself in an impressive collection of ancient Egyptian artefacts. A selection of the smaller bronzes were permanently on display on his desk both in Vienna and London. In Moses and Monotheism , Freud contradicts the Bible Biblical story of Moses with his own retelling of events claiming that Moses only led his close followers into freedom during an unstable period in Egyptian history after Akhenaten and that they subsequently killed Moses in rebellion and later combined with another monotheistic tribe in Midian based on a volcanic God. Freud explains that years after the murder of Moses, the rebels regretted their action thus forming the concept of the Messiah as a hope for the return of Moses as the Salvation Saviour of the Israelites . Freud said that the guilt from the murder of Moses is inherited through the generations this guilt then drives the Jew s to religion to make them fee ...   more details

  1. Four Dissertations

Four Dissertations is a collection of four essays by the Scottish enlightenment philosopher David Hume , first published in 1757. The four essays are ol type I li The Natural History of Religion li Of the Passions li Of Tragedy li Of the Standard of Taste ol The Natural History of Religion In this essay, Hume pioneers a Naturalism philosophy naturalist account of the causes, effects, and historical development of religious belief. Hume locates the origins of religion in emotion, particularly fear and the desire to control the future. He further argues that monotheism arises from competition between religions, as believers seek to distinguish their deities as superior to all rivals. The monotheist drive to dominate other beliefs, and to burnish the primitive, emotional core of religion under a veneer of theology, Hume concludes that this yields intolerance, intellectual dishonesty, and unnatural moral doctrines. Of the Passions Empty section date December 2007 Of Tragedy Empty section date December 2007 Of the Standard of Taste Of the Standard of Taste was a seminal essay on aesthetics that is innovative because it requires Hume to address the apparent relativity of taste, a conclusion that appears to follow from his own assumption that the good or beauty of a good work of art is identical with the positive human responses it generates. The essay s focus on the subject the viewer, the reader rather than the object the painting, the book is typical of the British sentimentalists or moral sense theorists of the eighteenth century. Unlike the French philosophers of the eighteenth century, who sought an objective definition of beauty, the British school tended to look for the connections between taste and moral judgments. Summary Hume begins with the observation that there is much variety in people s taste or the aesthetic judgments people make . However, Hume argues that there is a common mechanism in human nature that gives rise to, and often even provides justificatio ...   more details
