The Mishnah Berurah lang he Clarified Teaching is a work of halakha Jewish law by Rabbi Yisrael Meir Kagan Poland , 1838 1933 , also colloquially known by the name of another of his books, Chofetz Chaim Desirer of Life. His Mishnah Berurah is a commentary on Orach Chayim , the first section of the Shulchan Aruch which deals with laws of prayer, synagogue , Shabbat and Yom Tov holidays , summarizing the opinions of the Acharonim post Medieval rabbinic authorities on that work. ref name JVL cite web url http www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org jsource biography chofetz.html title The Chofetz Chaim Rabbi Yisroel Meir HaKohen accessdate 2008 10 10 ref The title Mishnah Berurah is a reference to the portion in Deuteronomy where Israel is commanded to inscribe God s commandments in large clear writing on a mountainside. The Mishnah Berurah is traditionally printed in 6 volumes alongside selected other commentaries. The work provides simple and contemporary explanatory remarks and citations to daily aspects of halakha . It is widely used as a reference and has mostly supplanted the Chayei Adam and the Aruch HaShulchan as the primary authority on Jewish daily living among Ashkenazi Jews , particularly those closely associated with haredi yeshiva s . The Mishnah Berurah is accompanied by additional in depth glosses called Be ur Halakha , a reference section called Sha ar Hatziyun these two were also written by the Chofetz Chaim , and additional commentaries called Be er Hagolah , Be er Heitev , and Sha arei Teshuvah . Mishnah Berurah Yomit is a daily study programme initiated by Vaad Daas Halacha and the Chofetz Chaim Heritage Foundation . The study program proceeds either on a 2 year cycle Daf a Day or a 5 year cycle Amud a Day and includes a focus on each yom tov festival in the 30 preceding days. 1. Chayei Adam

Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 Chayei Adam The Life of Man is a work of Halakha Jewish law by Rabbi Avraham Danzig 1748 1820 , dealing with the laws discussed in the Orach Chayim section of the Shulchan Aruch . It is divided into 224 sections 69 dealing with daily conduct and prayer, and 155 with Shabbat Shabbos Sabbath and Jewish Holidays Yom Tov holidays . Chayei Adam was intended primarily for the cultured layman , as opposed to rabbinic scholars, and the work is thus presented in a readily accessible form. In many cities, societies were formed for the purpose of studying Chayei Adam. In this work, Rabbi Danzig collected and critically sifted the Acharonim Acharonic material in the field of the Halakha written in the more than two and a half centuries since the appearance of the Shulchan Aruch . A parallel work Nishmas Adam , published together with Chayei Adam, discusses the halachic issues in greater depth. The two are usually printed together. The scholarship of the work is evidenced by the fact that Rabbi Chaim Volozhin , known for his opposition to digests of halacha , granted the work his approbation on condition that each section be cross referenced to the Shulkhan Arukh to allow for further study . The rulings of the Chayei Adam are often cited in later works, especially the Mishnah Berurah . Category Rabbinic legal texts and responsa Judaism stub Reli book stub he ...   more details

Gartel is Yiddish for belt . The word comes from the German language German G rtel , which is also the root word for the English girdle , as well as the word wikt girt girt . Gartels are generally very modest in appearance. Most are black, but some gartels are white, possibly to be used on some special occasions such as Yom Kippur , and cost more than black counterparts of the same width. Gartels are composed of multiple strings, anywhere from four to over forty in number. Jewish law Shulchan Aruch O.C. 91 2 requires that there be a physical divide between the heart and the genitalia during prayer. It is commonly explained that separating the upper and lower parts of the body manifests a control of the animal instincts of the person by the distinctly human intellect. Hasidic authorities maintain that a regular belt or the waistband of trousers do not suffice to fulfill this requirement, and that a designated sash is to be used. Additionally, donning a gartel is a preparation for prayer, in accordance with the line Prepare to meet your G d, O Israel in the Biblical verse, Book of Amos Amos 4 12. In contrast, Mishnah Berurah 91 5 states that any waistband is adequate for the first requirement, however for the second requirement more is needed, which the gartel fulfills. 1. Tzidkatcha

Tzidkatcha , Your righeousness is a prayer consisting of group of three verses that is recited during Mincha the afternoon prayer on Shabbat . It is said in memory of three Tzadikim righteous individuals who died on Shabbat Joseph Hebrew Bible Joseph , Moses and King David . ref Zohar ref It is recited at this prayer in particular because these individuals died in the afternoon. ref Artscroll Women s Siddur , page 514 ref Prayer content and meaning The three verses are Psalms 119 142, 71 19 and 36 7. They are recited in this order by Ashkenazi Jews Ashkenazi tradition , while Sephardi Jews Sephardi tradition calls for reciting them in the order as they appear in Psalms. The Yoel Sirkis Bach asserts that Moses did not die in the afternoon of Shabbat but of Friday however, he wasn t buried until Shabbat afternoon. Some say that the recital of this is to recall just judgement because it is immediately after Shabbat that sinners return to Gehenna Gehinom . ref Shulchan Aruch 292 2, Be er Heitev 3 and Mishnah Berurah 6 ref The recitation of these verses represents our acceptance of God s judgment, referred to as Tziduk HaDin , the righteousness of God s judgement . It expresses the conviction that God is just in his actions, even when they are seemingly negative in human eyes. Because the time for afternoon prayers on Shabbat is near the closing of the day, the saddened atmosphere makes it appropriate for this prayer to be said. On days on which Tachanun would be omitted had it been a weekday, Tzidkatcha is omitted on Shabbat , as the added happiness of the day negates these feelings of sorrow. ref Kitzur Shulchan Aruch 76 15 ref Because of the somber mood that is hinted to by this prayer, there is a related custom of not wishing the standard Shabbat greeting after the Mincha prayer. ref Eliyahu Kitov , Sefer haTodaa , The Book of our Heritage ref References references Jewish prayers Category Shabbat prayers Category Mincha ...   more details

Etymology The name Mincha is derived from the meal offering that accompanied each sacrifice. Origin The Hebrew noun minkhah is used 211 times in the Masoretic Text of the Hebrew Bible with the first instances being the minkhah offered by both Cain and Abel in Genesis 4. Rabbi Berel Wein 2002 says that Mincha was originated by Isaac , and described in Book of Genesis Genesis 24 63 by the words Isaac went out to converse in the field. where the verb converse suwach refers to with G d . ref name autogenerated87 Living Jewish values, practices and traditions By Berel Wein, page 87 ref Time frame for recitation Mincha is different from Shacharit and Maariv in that it is recited in the middle of the Mundane reason mundane day. Unlike Shacharit, which is recited upon arising, and Maariv, which can be recited before going to sleep, Mincha actually becomes an interruption in one s daily life. As a result of this, many Mincha groups have formed in workplaces and other places where many Jews are present during the day ref name autogenerated87 . Mincha may be recited from half an hour after halachic noontime. This earliest time is referred to as mincha gedola the large mincha . It is, however, preferably recited after mincha ketana 2.5 halachic hours before nightfall ref On another view, before sunset ref . Ideally, one should complete the prayers before sunset, although many authorities permit reciting Mincha until nightfall.
