unreferenced date April 2011 On The Train is a poem by Gillian Clarke . Its chief subject matter is the Paddington rail crash and its aftermath. The poem imagines commuters on the train heading towards the bone ship and refers to the anxiety of passengers and loved ones alike in the days following the disaster. Clarke uses the technology of 1999 to ground her poem in reality the mobile phones of the victims lie in the wreckage of the train while their friends and family frantically try to ring them. She quotes the phrase The Vodafone you are calling May have been switched off. Please call later. This everyday phrase takes on a new, more sinister meaning in context. Clarke concludes the poem by taking a lenient view, post Paddington, of train passengers who make mobile phone calls they no longer seem irritating, merely essential for reassuring people that they are still alive. This poem was written soon after the mobile phone boom of the late 1990s and as such is one of the first comments on the phenomenon. Two years later, mobile phones would again be closely linked with tragedy on 11 September 2001 . The poem has been included in the AQA Anthology for study at GCSE alongside several other of Gillian Clarke s poems. Wikify date January 2011 Ralph Bradley 1717 1788 , was a conveyancing barrister. Bradley was a contemporary of James Booth, who has been called the patriarch of modern conveyancing. Bradley was called to the bar by the society, of Gray s Inn, and practised at Stockton on Tees with great success for upwards of half a century, he is said to have managed the concerns of almost the whole county of Durham, and, though a provincial counsel, his opinions were everywhere received with the greatest respect. His drafts, like Booth s, were prolix to excess, but some of them were, to a very recent period, in use as precedents in the northern counties. He published London, 1779 An Enquiry into the Nature of Property and Estates as defined by English Law, in which are considered the opinions of Mr. Justice Blackstone and Lord Coke concerning Real Property. There was also published in 1804 in London Practical Points, or Maxims in Conveyancing, drawn from the daily experience of a late eminent conveyancer Bradley , with critical observations on the various parts of a Deed by J. Ritson. This was a collection of Bradley s notes on points of practice, and the technical minutiae of conveyancing as they were suggested in the course of his professional life. Ritson was a contemporary and fellow townsman of Bradley. The latter by his will left a considerable sum 40,000l. on trust for the purchase of books calculated to promote the interests of religion and virtue in Great Britain and the happiness of mankind. Paris de Grassis c. 1470 10 June 1528 was the Master of ceremonies to pope Julius II and pope Leo X . Biography He was born at Bologna . He was the nephew of Antonio de Grassis, nuncio to Frederick III, Holy Roman Emperor Frederick III and Bishop of Tivoli . Cardinal Achille de Grassis, his brother, one of the confidential diplomats of Julius II, was appointed Archbishop of Bologna by Leo X and died in 1523. In 1506 Paris de Grassis succeeded the famous John Burchard , master of ceremonies to popes Innocent VIII and Alexander VI , and continued his Diarium . The portion of the diary written by de Grassis covers the closing years of Julius II and the pontificate of Leo X, and is a precious reference work for historians. In 1515 Leo X made him Bishop of Pesaro , but he retained his office of master of ceremonies until the pope s death. He died at Rome in 1528. Works De Grassis was not a historian, merely a chronicler with pedantic fidelity he jotted down the minutiae of all pontifical ceremonies, trivial occurrences at the Roman Curia , the consistories and processions, the coming and going of ambassadors, journeys, etc. He had no political prejudices, though he shows that he had but small sympathy for the French or for various curial dignitaries. His sole interest was ceremonial and court etiquette and the meticulous recording of all details relating to such. Nevertheless his eye was alert to catch all that went on around him in consequence we owe him quite a number of anecdotes that throw much light on the characters of the two popes. Moreover, being the almost inseparable companion of both popes on their journeys, e.g. of Julius II during his campaign against the Romagna , he supplies us with many details that fill in or set off the narrative of the historian, down to such minute details such as the popes food preferences and daily attire. Jacopo Gaddi c. 1600 after 1658 was an Italian Neolatin and Italian language Italian writer from Republic of Florence Florence . Born to a wealthy noble family, Gaddi was well known in Florence and was in correspondence with numerous figures outside his birthplace, including Cardinal Catholicism cardinals of the Roman curia , the painter Cristofano Allori , and, during his sojourn in Florence, English writer John Milton . In 1628 he published a volume of Latin Poemata . Between 1636 and 1637 he published several works in Italian and Latin, including Elogia , Adlocutiones , and some short historical essays and poems. In two folios in 1648 and 1649 Gaddi published his most ambitious work, De Scriptoribus non Ecclesiasticis, Graecis, Latinis, Italicis . Gaddi was a member of the Florentine Academy from 1620 and the host of his own Svogliati Will less , a literary group that met at its peak around 1638 in his home on the Piazza Madonna , where he kept a distinguished library and gallery of paintings.
