  1. Apaurusheyatva

Hindu philosophy In Hinduism , Apaurusheyatva IAST IAST Apauru eya , Sanskrit , being unauthored , is used to describe the Vedas , the main Hindu scripture scripture in Hinduism . This implies that the Vedas are not authored by any agency, be it human or divine. Apaurusheya shabda unauthored word is an extension of apaurusheya which refers to the Vedas. Apaurusheyatva is a central concept in the Vedanta and Mimamsa schools of Hindu philosophy . These schools accept the Vedas as svatah pramana self evident pramana means of knowledge . These schools accept that the Vedas were heard by the Rishi s. The Mimamsa school asserts that since the Vedas are composed of words shabda and the words are composed of varna phoneme phonemes , the phonemes being eternal, the Vedas are also eternal. To this, if asked whether all words and sentences are eternal, the Mimamsa philosophers reply that the rules behind combination of phonemes are fixed and pre determined for the Vedas, unlike other words and sentences. The Vedanta school also accepts this line of argument. Commentaries on Prabhakara have been written by Shalikanatha in the 8th c. citation needed date May 2007 Sentence vs Word meaning One of the views of the pr bh karas is that words do not directly designate meaning any meaning that arises is because it is connected with other words anvit bhidh na , anvita connected abhidh denotation . We know or learn the meaning of a word only by considering the sentential context n which it appears we learn such word meanings together with their possible semantic connections with other words. Sentence meanings are grasped directly, from perceptual and contextual cues, skipping the stage of grasping singly the individual word meanings Matilal 1990 108 . This is very similar to the modern view of linguistic underspecification , and relates to the Semantics Dynamic turn in semantics Dynamic Turn in Semantics , which opposes the purely compositional view of arriving at sentence meaning. The pr bh karas were opposed by the IAST Bh as , who argued for a Principle of Compositionality compositional view of semantics called abhihit nvaya . In this view, the meaning of a sentence was understood only after understanding first the meanings of individual words. Words were independent, complete objects, a view that is close to the Jerry Fodor Fodor ian view of language. Ma ana Mi ra, also known as Suresvaracharya , was a follower of the Mimamsa Karma Mimamsa school of philosophy and a staunch defender of the holistic sphota doctrine of language. Later, he became a disciple of Adi Sankara . Ma ana Mi ra lived in the ancient India n town of Mithila Bihar during the time of Adi Sankara. He is known to be a student of a mimansa scholar Kumarila Bhatta . Being a follower of the Karma Mimamsa school, he was a ritual ist and performed all of the ritualistic duties prescribed by the Vedas . In certain Hindu traditions, Ma ana Mi ra is considered to be an incarnation of Brahma . Life Ma ana Mi ra is best known as the author of the Brahmasiddhi . He has often been identified with Sure vara , a strong tradition in Hinduism being that he started life as a Mimamsa M m msaka , but changed his name and became a Sanyasa sanny sin and an Advaita Advaitin after being defeated in debate by ankara. This is controversial, however, as it is said that the two men s works are too different for them to have been the same person. According to Kuppuswami Sastri, it is not likely that Ma ana Mi ra, the author of Brahmasiddhi , is identical with Sure vara, but the tradition is correct in describing Ma ana Mi ra and ankara as contemporaries. His critical edition of the Brahmasiddhi also points out that the name Ma ana Mi ra is both a title and a first name, which is a possible cause for a confusion of personalities. Ma ana Mi ra s brand of Advaita differs in certain critical details from that of ankara, whereas Sure vara s thought is very faithful to that of ankara.
