  1. Military volunteer

Unreferenced date December 2006 A military volunteer is a person who enlists in military service by free will, and is not a mercenary or a foreign volunteers foreign legionaire . Volunteers often enlist to fight in the armed forces of a foreign country. Military volunteers are essential for the operation of volunteer military volunteer militaries . Many armies, including the U.S. Army , formerly distinguished between volunteers enlisted during a war, and Regular Army regulars who served on long term basis. Troops raised as state militia were always volunteers even when recruited by conscription , while U.S. troops could be volunteers or regulars. The rank of an officer in a volunteer unit was separate from his rank if any as a regular, and usually higher. When the volunteer forces were disbanded at the end of the war, officers with both kinds of commission reverted to their regular rank. For instance, George Armstrong Custer became a Brigadier general United States Brigadier General of volunteers during the American Civil War , but when the war ended, he reverted to Captain United States Captain . He was later promoted to Lieutenant colonel United States Lieutenant Colonel . Volunteer rank should not be confused with Brevet military brevet rank. The move to a volunteer over conscription force for a national military appears to improve, at least for the United States , the professionalism of its standing armed forces. One result, however, is that a nation may be more quick to go to war because it does not have to answer to the public as it would if it needed to increase conscription to support the involvement in the armed conflict. ref Shear, Jeff, http www.miller mccune.com culture america in the hands of a professional military 30240 America in the Hands of a Professional Military , Miller McCune , 15 April 2011. ref Notes reflist See also Foreign volunteer DEFAULTSORT Military Volunteer Category Military sociology Military stub de Freiwilliger Milit r lt Savanoris ...   more details

  1. Volunteer military

A volunteer military or all volunteer military is one which derives its manpower from volunteers rather than conscription or mandatory service. A country may offer attractive pay and benefits through military recruitment to attract volunteers. Many countries with volunteer militaries reserve the right to renew conscription in the event of an emergency. In recent decades, the trend among numerous countries has been to move from conscription to all volunteer military forces. One significant example is in France , which has historically been Lev e en masse the first to introduce modern conscription and whose model was followed by many other countries in Europe and elsewhere around the world. 1. Volunteer (botany)

Notability date January 2009 Unreferenced date January 2009 In gardening and botany botanical terminology, a volunteer is a plant that grows on its own, rather than being deliberately planted by a farmer or gardener. Volunteers often grow from seeds that float in on the wind, are dropped by birds, or are inadvertently mixed into compost before it is used. Unlike weeds, which are unwanted plants, a volunteer may be encouraged once it appears, being watered, fertilized, or otherwise cared for. Volunteers that grow from the seeds of specific cultivars do not reliably come true , and often differ significantly from the parent. Such open pollinated plants, if they show desirable characteristics, may be selected to become new cultivars. Agriculture In agricultural rotations, self set plants from the previous year s crop may become established as weeds in the current crop, to which they may pose a problem. Example volunteer winter wheat will germinate to quite high levels in a following oilseed rape crop, usually requiring chemical control measures. In agricultural research, high purity of a harvested crop is usually desirable. To achieve this, typically a group of temporary workers will walk the crop rows looking for volunteer plants, or rogue plants in an exercise often referred to as roguing. 1. Volunteer's dilemma

The volunteer s dilemma game theory game models a situation in which each of N players faces the decision of either making a small sacrifice from which all will benefit, or free rider problem freeriding . One example is a scenario in which the electricity has gone out for an entire neighborhood. All inhabitants know that the electricity company will fix the problem as long as at least one person calls to notify them, at some cost. If no one volunteers, the worst possible outcome is obtained for all participants. If any one person elects to volunteer, the rest benefit by not doing so. ref cite book first William last Poundstone title Prisoner s Dilemma John von Neumann, Game Theory, and the Puzzle of the Bomb year 1993 location New York publisher Anchor Books isbn 038541580X ref A public good is only produced if at least one person volunteers to pay an arbitrary cost. In this game, bystanders decide independently on whether to sacrifice themselves for the benefit of the group. Because the volunteer receives no benefit, there is a greater incentive for freeriding than to sacrifice one s self for the group. If no one volunteers, everyone loses. The social phenomena of the bystander effect and diffusion of responsibility heavily relate to the volunteer s dilemma. citation needed date May 2011 Payoff matrix The payoff matrix for the game is shown below border cellpadding 5 cellspacing 0 align center Volunteer s dilemma payoff matrix example scope col style color 900 at least one other ... color 009 1 span span style color 009 10 span When the volunteer s dilemma takes place between only ... matrix, there is no dominant strategy in the volunteer s dilemma.
