Vacancy The by election was caused by the death of the sitting Liberal Party UK Liberal Member of Parliament UK MP , T. E. Ellis Thomas Edward Ellis on 5 April 1899. ref The Times, 6 April 1899 p4 ref Candidates Merionethshire Liberal Association considered a number of possible candidates but the favourite from an early stage was Owen Morgan Edwards , an academic at Lincoln College, Oxford , a native of Merionethshire who was described as an ardent Welsh nationalism Welsh Nationalist . ref The Times, 14 April 1899 p11 ref Edwards was hardly enthusiastic to take up the offer of being the Liberal candidate. He wrote to Dr Edward Jones, chairman of the county Liberals, that he had many days of anxiety and sleepless nights since learning he was the front runner. This is a list of High Sheriffs of Merionethshire . The historic county of Merioneth was originally created in 1284. The administrative county of Merioneth was created from the historic county under the Local Government Act 1888 . This was abolished in turn under the Local Government Act 1972 on April 1, 1974 and became the Meirionnydd district of the new county of Gwynedd . The shrievalty of Merionethshire, together with that of Anglesey and Caernarvonshire, was abolished in 1974 when the county and shrievalty of Gwynedd was created. Gwynedd Constabulary was the Home Office police force for the counties of Caernarfonshire , Anglesey and Merionethshire , Wales . The force was formed in 1950 by the merger of Caernarfonshire Constabulary , Anglesey Constabulary and Merionethshire Constabulary . It was itself amalgamated with Flintshire Constabulary and Denbighshire Constabulary in 1967, the combined force also being known as the Gwynedd Constabulary, renamed North Wales Police in 1974. Llwyngwern was a station on the Corris Railway in Wales , built to serve the hamlet of Pantperthog and the residents of Plas Llwyngwern, where a daughter of the 5th Marquess of Londonderry lived with her husband. Although the Plas was in Montgomeryshire , the station was across the Afon Dulas in Merionethshire . The station was built at Llwyngwern, rather than at Pantperthog, because there is a very tight bend and a steep gradient on the railway at Pantperthog. The former Llwyngwern slate quarry is now the home of the Centre for Alternative Technology .
