  1. Master of Saint Francis

Unreferenced date December 2009 Orphan date December 2009 Master of St. Francis ital. Maestro di S. Francesco . Anonymous work Anonymous Italian painter, whose works of art date back to 1260 1280. This painter of fresco es and Panel painting panel s and, perhaps, designer of stained glass in the district around Perugia , Umbria , Italy , was named by Thode after a panel of Francis of Assisi St. Francis with Angel s in Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli , Assisi , Umbria . Much of the work attributed to him was part of the early phase in the decoration of Basilica of San Francesco d Assisi , and includes the fresco cycle in the nave of the Lower Church with five scenes from the Passion Christianity Passion of Christ on the right wall and five scenes from the Life of St Francis on the left. These were damaged by the later opening of the side chapels. In spite of the obvious participation of assistants, the entire cycle seems to have been planned by a single artist and can be considered as homogeneous and characteristic of his style. This was largely based on the later works of Giunta Pisano but also shows the influence of such Umbrian artists as Rainaldetto di Ranuccio , Simeone and Machilone and of contemporary manuscript illumination, for example the Gospel Book of Giovanni da Gaibena Padua , Bib. Capitolare . The Master of St Francis embodies an important aspect of the contact between Italian and Byzantine art of this period Byzantine elements, particularly of iconography , are found with western forms of ornamentation and a use of colour that is far from Byzantine. 1. Master of the Saint Lambrecht Votive Altarpiece

File Master of the Saint Lambrecht Votive Altarpiece 01.jpg thumb 300 px Votive panel from St. Lambrecht Abbey, The Virgin of Mercy c. 1430 . In the collection of the Landesmuseum Joanneum , Graz, Austria The Master of the Saint Lambrecht Votive Altarpiece was an Austria n painter active between about 1410 and 1440. His name is derived from a panel, formerly in St. Lambrecht s Abbey in the village of Sankt Lambrecht in Styria . This, now in the Alte Galerie in Graz , depicts a former abbot of the monastery, Heinrich Moyker, kneeling before the Virgin of Mercy with him is Hemma of Gurk . Moyker was the donor of the altarpiece, which depicts the Hungary Hungarian victory over the Ottoman Empire Ottoman Turks . A number of other paintings are believed to be by his hand, as is the design of a stained glass window in Sankt Lambrecht some of these have also been ascribed to the so called Master of the Linz Crucifixion, while others are believed to be by Hans von Judenburg or Hans von T bingen . The latter appears to have lived too late to be identified with the Master s oeuvre. Stylistically, the Master s ascribed body of work indicates a familiarity with International Gothic as practiced in Bohemia . Other stylistic traits suggest knowledge of the work being done in Cologne and Westphalia , while still others show aspects of the Vienna Viennese , France French , and Burgundy region Burgundian schools.
