Manta and Moray are a pair of amphibious superheroes who first appeared in a segment of the omnibus animated TV series Tarzan and the Super 7 in the 1970s. Manta Monarch of the Deep is the last survivor of the ancient civilization of Mu lost continent Mu , which used to exist in the Pacific Ocean . Mu was destroyed by a terrible explosion, but Manta was engulfed by a wave of unknown radiation, and placed into a form of suspended animation deep beneath the waves. He was discovered and awoken by Moray, a human woman, whom he subsequently married. He is amphibious, but cannot be away from water for too long or he will weaken and die. He is able to communicate with the creatures of sea and land. Moray was raised by dolphin s after the plane her parents had been flying in crashed into the sea, she learned to live in the ocean. She discovered Manta, whom she managed to revive. They got married and pledged themselves to protecting the seaworld from any who would threaten it. She is an excellent swimmer, able to hold her breath for incredibly long periods. Secondary characters include Whiskers sea lion and Guppy gray whale . MANTA was an acronym for Multiple Air Naval Terrain Assault Force, which referred to both the good guys and their spacecraft , searching the galaxy for a New Earth . Their foe was called Viper Squad , who traveled in a spacecraft called Red Venom . The back story involved the sending of a spaceship to find a New Earth for colonization by the World Government , given the overpopulation overpopulated and pollution polluted state of Earth Planet Earth . The Viper Squad aimed to take over MANTA and colonize New Earth themselves. The plastic toyline consisted of small toy soldiers and much larger spaceships, as well as a battle fortress . Several of the gun s were capable of launching plastic projectile s, including the infamous Zip Gun , a hopper loaded, gravity fed. crank handle operated design that launched 5mm plastic spheres at an extremely high rate for a distance of around eight feet.. The trilogy consists of the three books Omnivore 1968 , Orn 1970 , and Ox 1975 . Omnivore has as its frame the investigation of the deaths of eighteen travelers from Earth to the distant planet Nacre . We see Nacre through the eyes of three surviving scientist explorers Cal, a blood drinker, Veg, a vegetarian, and Aquilon, an omnivore. Nacre is a planet whose dominant species are fungus fungi , including the intelligent mantas . The mantas take the form of soft bodied creatures capable of high speeds and flight, resembling the manta rays of Earth superficially. They are carnivores, who farm the one extant herbivore species by protecting them from the voracious omnivore species. The planet is notable in its thick atmosphere, which allows flight to be performed with less energy, and permits the existence of air borne phytoplankton . The herbivores eat the plankton, and the omnivores eat anything they can. Orn involves travel by the scientists and mantas into a parallel dimension they dub Paleo, resembling the distant past of Earth, where they encounter dinosaur species and an intelligent flightless bird called Orn . Orn has the ability of genetic memory, able to remember anything that happened to an ancestor prior to the time of their reproduction. Much of the plot conflict stems from the love triangle between the protagonists and the mysterious motives of a cybernetically augmented government agent sent along to monitor their progress.
