Sir Manasseh Masseh Lopes, 1st Baronet 27 January 1755 &ndash 26 March 1831 , of Maristow in Devon , was a British Member of Parliament and borough monger. Parliamentary career Lopes was a member of a wealthy family of Sephardi Jews Sephardic Jewish Portuguese Jews Portuguese origin, and was born in Jamaica . In 1798 he had acquired Maristow House near Roborough in Devon , which became his family seat. He had also for many years been investing part of his fortune in acquiring influence in a number of parliamentary borough s. By the law as it stood at that period, no member of the Jewish religion could be elected to Parliament. Many Christian denominations were similarly prohibited. In 1802, Lopes converted to Christianity, and later the same year he entered Parliament as British Tory Party Tory member for New Romney UK Parliament constituency New Romney . He subsequently also represented Evesham UK Parliament constituency Evesham from 1807 and Barnstaple UK Parliament constituency Barnstaple from 1812. Meanwhile, Lopes was exerting his influence in various boroughs on behalf of the government, and in 1805 he was created a baronet , with a special remainder to his nephew Sir Ralph Lopes, 2nd Baronet Ralph Franco , son of his sister Esther. Ralph, who inherited the baronetcy on his death, later changed his surname to Lopes . It was the dominant party in the country under diverse names in the seventies, eighties and nineties under its then leader Solomon Mamaloni . Mamaloni served as prime minister from 1981 to 1984, 1989 to 1993 and 1994 to 1997, and the party was always among the largest in the Solomon Islands. The party did well in the August 1997 parliamentary elections, but Mamaloni resigned as leader and Danny Philip replaced him. Other parties made a coalition against it and no member of the party became prime minister. Philip did not last long as party leader. The party was known as the National Unity Group from 1989 until the late 1990s. After the resignation of the leader of the Solomon Islands Liberal Party , Bartholomew Ulufa alu , as prime minister, PPP leader Manasseh Sogavare became prime minister.
