  1. Harderian gland

Harderian gland is a gland found within the eye s Orbit anatomy orbit which occurs in vertebrate s reptiles, amphibians, birds and mammals that possess a nictitating membrane . The gland can be tubular gland compound tubular or alveolar gland compound tubuloalveolar , and the fluid it secretes mucous, serous or lipid varies between different groups of animals. In some animals it acts as an accessory to the lacrimal gland , secreting fluid that eases movement of the nictitating membrane. Research has proposed that the gland has several other functions, including that of a photoprotection photoprotective organ, a location of immune response , a source of thermoregulation thermoregulatory lipids, a source of pheromone s, a site of osmoregulation , et al. The Harderian gland was first described in 1694 by Swiss anatomist Johann Jacob Harder 1656 1711 . Merge Stuffing box discuss Talk Stuffing box Merge discussion date January 2010 Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 A gland is a general type of stuffing box , used to seal a rotating or reciprocating shaft against a fluid. The most common example is in the head of a tap faucet where the gland is usually packed with string which has been soaked in tallow or similar grease. The gland nut allows the packing material to be compressed to form a watertight seal and prevent water leaking up the shaft when the tap is turned on. The gland at the rotating shaft of a centrifugal pump may be packed in a similar way and graphite grease used to accommodate continuous operation. The linear seal around the piston rod of a double acting steam piston is also known as a gland, particularly in marine applications. Likewise the shaft of a handpump or wind pump is sealed with a gland where the shaft exits the borehole. Other types of sealed connections without moving parts are also sometimes called glands for example, the point where an electrical flex exits a conduit is often sealed by an adjustable gland to facilitate assembly and to prevent water ingress. gallery Image Gland packing01.jpg Image Gland packing001.jpg Image Gland packing002.jpg Image Gland packing003.jpg gallery See also Compression seal fitting Labyrinth seal DEFAULTSORT Gland Category Plumbing Category Seals mechanical Mech engineering stub de Stopfbuchse eo topskatolo hu T m t persely nl Stopbuspakking ru tl Glandula ng makinarya tr Salmastra ...   more details

  1. Oil gland

Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 An oil gland is a Sebaceous gland sebaceous or sebiferous gland that secretes sebaceous matter. Oil glands are part of the body s integumentary system and serve to protect the body against germs. They are mainly situated in the Dermis corium or true skin. True oil glands secrete matter through a duct. Many creatures, such as fish, e.g., have oil glands. In mammals they serve as a protectant and lubricant for hair and skin. In birds it is located at the base of the tail, which also supplies oil that is spread upon the feathers during preening . Ductless glands Ductless gland s situated internally are not true oil glands, however, fishermen will often cleanse bottom feeding fish such as carp by removing an internal organ which is said to be the oil gland . Ductless internal organs are called glands, as well. Having no ducts, they tend to store substances which give a disagreeable taste to a cooked fish. Removing the oil gland from a carp prior to cooking removes some of the accumulated substances, some of which may also be toxic or harmful to a person who eats fish. 1. Duvernoy's gland

The Duvernoy s gland is a gland found in some groups of colubrid snake s. It is distinguished from the venom gland and is not found in viperid or elapid snakes. It was named for France French zoologist Georges Louis Duvernoy who first described the gland in 1832. ref name Duvernoy Duvernoy DM. 1832. M moire sur les caract res tir s de l anatomie pour distinguer les serpents venimeux des serpents non venimeux. Annales des Sciences Naturelles 26 113 160. ref The Duvernoy s gland is positioned posterior to the eye, encased in a thin cover of connective tissue, and consists mostly of serous cell s. A single, short duct extends anteromedially from the lumen of the gland to the base of the posterior fangs. Function The function of the Duvernoy s gland has been the source of much study and speculation, and debate is still ongoing. 1. Suprapedal gland

The suprapedal gland or mucous pedal gland is an anatomical feature found in some snail s and slug s. It is a gland located inside the front end of the foot of gastropod s. ref name Barker Barker G. M. 2001 Gastropods on Land Phylogeny, Diversity and Adaptive Morphology. in Barker G. M. ed. http books.google.com books?id WlvX 9Wt0toC&hl The biology of terrestrial molluscs . CABI Publishing , Oxon, UK, ISBN 0 85199 318 4. 1 146, cited page page 12. ref The term suprapedal means above the foot . The function of this gland is to produce mucus . The gland opens on the front end of the sole foot sole , on the ventral side of the foot. ref name Barker The mucus produced by this gland becomes a thin layer covering the sole of the foot, and this helps the gastropod in Animal locomotion moving . ref name Barker There are gland cell s in the suprapedal gland. For example in the suprapedal gland of the land snail Pomatias elegans there are three types of gland cells cells producing mucoprotein s, cells producing protein s and cells producing sulphated mucopolysaccharides . ref Shirbhate R. & Cook A. 1987 .
