It also does not share the educational goals of Minix . Nevertheless, the OS may have been of interest to others for various purposes, due to its small resource usage compared with other OSs and other factors. Xiafs was a file system for the operating system Linux which was conceived and developed by Frank Xia and was based on the MINIX file system . Today it is obsolete and not in use, except possibly in some historic installations. History Linux originally used the MINIX file system, but it had a number of limitations. For example, the length of filenames was limited to 14 characters and the partition size was limited to 64 MB. To replace the MINIX file system, the extended file system or ext was developed. However, it too had some problems such as poor performance and the lack of some date stamps. Two contenders for replacing ext were quickly developed ext2 and Xiafs. The two file systems were included in the standard kernel in December 1993 Linux kernel Linux 0.99.15 . ext2 and Xiafs had the same goal to offer good performance, reasonable limitations, and fixing the flaws of Extended file system ext . Initially, Xiafs was more powerful and more stable than Ext2, but being a fairly minimalistic modification of the Minix file system, it was not very well suited for future extension. ref http corp jp.linuxfoundation.org jp uploads seminar20060911 Ted Tso.pdf The Linux ext2 3 4 Filesystem Past, Present, and Future , Ted Ts o ref The end result was that Xiafs changed very little while ext2 evolved considerably, rapidly improving stability, performance and adding extensions. ext2, after some shakedown time, quickly became the standard file system of Linux. Since then, ext2 has developed into a very mature and robust file system. Xiafs was removed along with the original Extended file system from Linux kernel Linux 2.1.21, as it was no longer in use and was unmaintained. ext2 , ext3 and their successor ext4 are in the Linux kernel. Comparison with ext2 Xiafs was less powerful and offered less functionality than ext2. The maximum size of a file was 64 MiB and the maximum size of a partition was 2 GiB. While this was an improvement over ext, it did not measure up to ext2. The ... more details

The ACK was originally closed source software that allowed executable binaries to be distributed for Minix as a special case , but in April 2003 it was released under an open source BSD licenses BSD license. It has frontends for programming language s C programming language C , Pascal programming language Pascal , Modula 2 , Occam programming language Occam , and BASIC . The ACK achieves maximum portability by using an intermediate language using bytecode , called EM intermediate language EM . Each language front end produces EM object file s, which are then processed through several generic optimisers before being translated by a back end into native machine code . ACK comes with a generic linker and librarian capable of manipulating files in the ACK s own a.out based format it will work on files containing EM code as well as native machine code. It is short for Tom s floppy which has a root filesystem and is also boot floppy bootable . Its author, Tom Oehser, touts it as The most GNU Linux kernel Linux on one floppy disk , containing many common Linux command line tools useful for system recovery Linux and other operating system s. It also features drivers for many types of hardware, and network connectivity. It can be created from within Linux or Microsoft Windows 95, 98 or ME running in MS DOS mode, but not on floppy from NT, 2000, XP, or Vista as their floppy driver does not allow the extended format , either by formatting a standard 1.44MB floppy disk as a higher density 1.722MB disk and writing its image to the disk, or by burning it as a bootable CD. It is capable of reading and writing the filesystems of many operating systems, including ext2 ext3 used in Linux , File Allocation Table FAT used by DOS and Windows , NTFS used in Windows NT , Windows 2000 2000 , and Windows XP XP and Minix used by the Minix operating system . A few of the utilities on tomsrtbt are written in the Lua programming language , and many more use BusyBox . Space saving compiler options were used throughout, the kernel was patched to support loading an image compressed with Bzip2 , and in many cases older or alternate versions of programs were selected due to their smaller size.
