Unreferenced date August 2007 The M42 jump uniform was the uniform used by U.S. paratroopers during the earlier and middle part of World War II . This includes D Day and the breakout from Normandy . M42 Jump Uniform description The M42 was Olive Drab 3 and some specimens sometimes appear khaki despite the fact that upon issue it may well be a more greenish color. It contains four pockets with two button snaps on each, along with a unique dual zippered knife pocket on the upper chest designed to contain a Imperial Schrade Schrade Presto utility switchblade pocketknife . Due to the somewhat fragile nature of the uniform, however, the M42 was often reinforced with thicker, tougher canvas on the elbows, crotch and knees. The M42 was worn by members of such prestigious units as the 101st Airborne and the 82nd Airborne . The M42 was eventually phased out in favor of the new U.S. Army M 1943 Uniform which was a darker green, OD 7. Despite this, various individuals chose to keep the M42 and several units kept it as their primary uniform, through personal preference, or to show veterancy. The Corcoran jump boots were initially replaced by the M 1943 Combat Service Boots M43 Combat Boots . This particular change was ferociously challenged by the airborne, as the double buckled cuff at the top of the boots could allegedly sometimes catch parachute static lines and seriously injure a jumper, though they also preferred the Corcoran boots for the status that they gave above regular infantry. The lens board itself is usually flat, square, and made of metal most commonly Aluminum or wood and sometimes plastic. The lens board will have a hole of various diameters drilled dead center on the board. A lens board typically varies between 1 and 4 millimeters in thickness. The overall size and shape of the lens board depends on the brand of camera and film format used. Some cameras will use 2 to 4 screws to secure the lens board to the front standard of the view camera, most commonly however, the lens board will be secured by one or more locking levers or tabs to allow tool less removal of the lens board. The rear surface of a lens board is usually painted matte black to keep light entering the camera through the lens during exposure from reflecting off the surface and interfering with the projected image. File PentaxK7 7.jpg thumb A digital SLR camera with a pancake lens. A pancake lens is colloquial term for a flat, thin lens short barrel , generally a normal or slightly wide prime lens for a camera. There are pancake lenses for two kinds of cameras Compact System Camera CSC and single lens reflex SLR . Motivation Pancake lenses are primarily valued for providing quality optics in a compact package. The resulting camera and lens assembly may even be small enough to be pocketable, a design feature which is usually impractical with conventional SLR bodies and lens assembiles. DpReview review of Olympus E P1, for instance, History An early example is the Zeiss Tessar of 1902. The design has seen a resurgence due to the growth of the mirrorless interchangeable lens digital camera so called EVIL camera market, notably the Micro Four Thirds system . In the 1960s and 1970s the Nikon GN lens was a notable example, while in the 1970s and 1980s pancake lenses were used in compact single lens reflex SLR cameras. ref Digital Photography Review DPReview forum http forums.dpreview.com forums read.asp?forum 1000&message 20033770 Re Why is a pancake lens a big deal? , Photomonkey, 10 01 14 PM, Thursday, September 14, 2006 ref ref http mydigitalcamera.us pancake lenses pancake lenses ref Gallery File SMC Pentax M 40mm pancake.jpg SMC Pentax M 40mm File Pentax DA 21mm F3.2 AL Limited.jpg Pentax DA 21mm f3.2 Gallery See Also Pentax K mount Micro Four Thirds system Micro Four Thirds lenses Micro Four Thirds Lenses Samsung NX mount NX lenses Samsung NX Lenses Sony E mount Available lenses Sony E mount Lenses Nikon 1 References reflist Category Photographic lens designs ... more details
