The LinePrinter Daemon protocol LinePrinter Remote protocol or LPD , LPR is a network protocol for submitting print jobs to a remote printer. The original implementation of LPD was in the Berkeley printing system in the BSD UNIX operating system the LPRng project also supports that protocol. Image Sinclair.zx.thermal.printer.jpg thumb 300px The Sinclair ZX Printer, a small spark printer for the ZX81 and ZX Spectrum computers A spark printer is an obsolete form of computer printer which uses a special paper coated with a layer of aluminium over a black backing, which is printed on by using a pulsing current onto the paper via two styli that move across on a moving belt at high speed. They were introduced in the late 1960s. Such devices were sometimes incorrectly referred to as thermal printer s which is in fact a different technology. Spark printing was a simple and inexpensive technology. The print quality was relatively poor, but at a time when conventional printers cost hundreds of pounds, spark printers sub 100 price was a major selling point. The other major downside is that they can only print onto special metallised paper such paper is no longer readily available. Models The Sinclair ZX Printer , introduced in November 1981 for the low end Sinclair ZX81 ZX81 and later ZX Spectrum home computer s used the spark printing method, and retailed for Pound Sterling 49.95. A refinement of the Iris printer , the Veris also uses a continuous flow ink system to produce continuous tone output on specially designed media. Unlike most inkjet printers which fire drops only when needed, the Veris uses eight 1 micrometer glass jets that operate continuously under high pressure, vibrated by a piezoelectric crystal to produce drops at a 1 MHz rate, or 8 million drops per second in total. Drops that are not needed to form the image are deflected electrostatically into a waste collection system, and individual drops can be directed to a specific position on the media. The Veris prints with the same quality of the Iris, only faster because of the larger number of jets or pens as they are called . Image Kodak LED Printer 20R.jpg thumb Kodak LED printer Image LED printhead.JPG thumb Oki LED printhead An LED printer is a type of computer printer. LED technology uses a light emitting diode array as a light source in the printhead. The LED bar pulse flashes across the entire page width and creates the image on the print drum or belt as it moves past. LED s are more efficient and reliable than conventional laser printers, since they have fewer moving parts . Depending on design, LED printers can have faster rates of print than some laser based designs, and are generally cheaper to manufacture. Laser systems rely on elaborate combinations of rotating mirrors and lenses that must remain in alignment throughout their use. The laser scans from one end of a line to another, then starts on the next line. Unlike laser printer s, an LED printhead has no moving parts. File 2008TaipeiPack Linx Barcode Printer.jpg thumb 250px A barcode printer A barcode printer or bar code printer is a computer peripheral for printing barcode labels or tags that can be attached to physical objects. Barcode printers are commonly used to label cartons before shipment, or to label retail items with Universal Product Code UPC s or European Article Number EAN s. The most common barcode printers employ one of two different printing technologies. Thermal printer Direct thermal printer s use a printhead to generate heat that causes a chemical reaction in specially designed paper that turns the paper black. Thermal transfer printer s also use heat, but instead of reacting the paper, the heat melts a wax y or resin substance on a ribbon that runs over the label or tag material. The heat transfers ink from the ribbon to the paper. Direct thermal printers are generally less expensive, but they produce labels that can become illegible if exposed to heat, direct sunlight, or chemical vapors. Barcode printers are designed for different markets. Industrial barcode printers are used in large warehouses and manufacturing facilities. They have large paper capacities, operate faster and have a longer service life . For retail and office environments, desktop barcode printers are most common. A number of famous men served as printer s devils in their youth, including Ambrose Bierce , Benjamin Franklin , Samuel Fuller , Thomas Jefferson , Walt Whitman , Mark Twain , Joel Chandler Harris , Warren Harding , John Harvey Kellogg John Kellogg , Lyndon Johnson , Hoodoo Brown , James Hogg , Joseph Lyons , Albert Parsons , and L zaro C rdenas . Derivation The origin of printer s devil is not definitively known. Various competing theories of the phrase s origin follow. Printer s devil has been ascribed to the fact that printer s apprentices would inevitably have parts of their skin stained black by the ink used in printing. As black was associated with the black arts, the apprentice came to be called a devil. Another origin is linked to the fanciful belief among printers that a special devil see Titivillus haunted every print ... type. The apprentice became a substitute source of blame and came to be called a printer ... to Aldus Manutius , a well known venice Venetian printer of the renaissance , and founder of the Aldine ... of being the embodiment of Satan and dubbed the printer s devil . One likely source stems from the fact that worn and broken lead type is thrown into a hellbox , which the printer s devil must take to the furnace for melting and recasting. Restaurants and clubs in the alley served liquor anyway, often claiming it had been brown bagged brought in by customers . Law enforcement agencies normally looked the other way on such sales. Liquor sales in restaurants were finally legalized in 1968. In 1998, murder came to the Alley when longtime club proprietor David Skull Schulman was murdered by a robber shortly before his club was due to open. Today There are currently two live band bars, two karaoke bars, and one adult entertainment bar. Bourbon Street Blues and Boogie Bar, the Fiddle and Steel Guitar Bar, Lonnie s Western Room, Ms. Kellis and The Brass Stables are all found in Printer s Alley today.
