  1. Greek College, Oxford

The Greek College , established 1698, was a short lived attempt to create a separate Colleges of the University of Oxford college for Greek Orthodox students at the Oxford University . During the 17th century, there was regular contact and exchange of theological views between Eastern Orthodoxy and the various Protestant churches cf. Patriarch Cyril of Constantinople , with some aiming for a union against their common dogmatic enemy, the Roman Catholic Church . The idea to establish a Greek Orthodox College at Oxford was first suggested in 1677, but it was only established in 1698 through the initiative of Benjamin Woodroffe , last Principal of Gloucester Hall , and with the support of William Paget, 6th Baron Paget Lord William Paget , then ambassador to the Ottoman Empire , the Levant Company and the Greek Orthodox Church . The project eventually failed in 1705 due to the objections of the Greek Orthodox Church. There are only 15 Greeks reported as members, although Greeks attended Oxford both before and after the existence of the College. One alumnus of the Greek College was Alexander Helladius . ref cite journal url http www.oxfordtoday.ox.ac.uk 2001 02 v14n1 05.shtml title The Greek College last Doll first Peter volume 14 issue 1 date Michaelmas 2001 work Oxford Today The University Magazine accessdate 23 August 2010 deadlink date November 2011 ref See also Greek scholars in the Renaissance References reflist Further reading Cite book last1 Doll first1 Peter M. title Anglicanism and Orthodoxy 300 years after the Greek College in Oxford year 2006 publisher Lang location Oxford isbn 978 3 03910 580 9 pages 268 276 coord missing Oxfordshire Category 1698 establishments in England Category 1705 disestablishments Category Educational institutions established in the 1690s Category Former colleges and halls of the University of Oxford Category Greek Orthodoxy UOxford stub ...   more details
