  1. Specialised lexicography

refimprove date September 2010 Specialised lexicography also spelled specialized lexicography is an academic discipline that is concerned with development of theories and principles for the design, compilation, use and evaluation of specialized dictionaries. A specialized dictionary is a dictionary that covers a relatively restricted set of phenomena, usually within one or more subject fields. An alternative term for this type of dictionary is LSP dictionary . Various aspects of specialised lexicography The study of specialised lexicography deals with several important aspects within the general field of lexicography . The problems involved in designing and making bilingual dictionaries within a culture dependent subject field involves aspects such as the user s linguistic competence in both languages as well as the user s extra linguistic factual competence in both cultures. As described in Nielsen 1994, the coverage of dictionaries may be divided into three lexicographically relevant types. First, the multi field dictionary , which covers several subject fields secondly, the single field dictionary , which covers one subject field and thirdly, the sub field dictionary , which covers one sub field within a general subject field. This distinction is lexicographically important, because the best treatment of a subject field is given in single field and sub field dictionaries, as these are the best reference tools for containing and presenting the relevant data. The function for which the dictionary has been designed is also relevant. The dictionary may have been designed to help the user with two general types of function communication oriented and knowledge oriented. The former ... that are independent of communication. 1. Legal lexicography

Legal lexicography is a term used to describe the complex of activities that are concerned with the development of theories and principles for the design, compilation, use and evaluation of dictionaries within the field of law, see e.g. Nielsen 1994. Overview As a branch of the general discipline lexicography , legal lexicography may be divided into theoretical legal lexicography and practical legal lexicography. The result of practical legal lexicography is called a law dictionary . Law dictionaries are available in print and online. Legal lexicography is not just about terms, but also about language and usage. Especially when making bilingual law dictionaries, the lexicographers need to take a broad view of what legal lexicography involves. Most users of bilingual law dictionaries need information about language and law, and the lexicographer s task is to present the information as clearly and structured as possible. This involves various lexicographic analyses user research, dictionary typology, and a clear structure for presenting and linking the information in the dictionary. The information must be presented in such a way that the user is not burdened with heavy lexicographic information cost s. As pointed out in Nielsen 1994, law dictionaries can serve different functions. The traditional law dictionary with definitions of legal terms serves to help users understand the legal texts they read a communicative function or to help users acquire knowledge about legal matters independent of any text a cognitive function such law dictionaries are usually monolongual. Bilingual law dictionaries may serve several functions. First, they may have entry words in one language and definitions ... texts, usually in a foreign language. 1. Lexicographic information cost

Lexicographic information cost is a new concept within the field of lexicography . The term refers to the difficulties and inconveniences that the user of a dictionary believes or feels are associated with consulting a particular dictionary or dictionary article. For example, the extensive use of abbreviations in articles in order to save space may annoy the user, because it is often difficult to read such condensed texts and understanding the abbreviations, thereby increasing the lexicographic information costs. The important point in connection with lexicographic information costs is the relation between the information costs anticipated by the user and the information value the user expects to gain from consulting a dictionary or dictionary article. The more easily a user can navigate a dictionary and its articles, the lower the information costs and, hopefully, the more content with the dictionary the user will be. The higher the information costs of a dictionary, the more dissatisfied the user will be. There are two general types of lexicographic information costs search costs are the efforts required by users when searching for something in dictionaries, i.e. , the look up activities required to find what they are looking for and comprehension costs, which are the efforts required by users to understand and interpret the data in dictionaries. ref Sandro Nielsen The Effect of Lexicographical Information Costs on Dictionary Making and Use . In Lexikos 18 2008, 170 189. ref The concept of lexicographic information costs was first proposed by the Danish scholar and metalexicographer Sandro Nielsen see below .
