He attended the private schools in that county and graduated from Erskine College at Due West, South Carolina Due West , South Carolina in 1876. He began the study of laws in September 1876, was admitted to the bar association bar in March 1877, and commenced practice in Columbia, Tennessee in January 1879. He was a member of the Tennessee Senate from 1899 to 1901. He was elected as a Democratic Party United States Democrat to the Fifty seventh United States Congress Fifty seventh and the ten succeeding Congresses. He served from March 4, 1901 until his death in Washington, D.C. on August 2, 1922. Lewis was only afforded primary education, but continued to value education as the way to better Barbados, and in turn this would benefit all Barbadians Bajans . Elected to the Barbados Parliament in 1942, Barbados Electors Association BEA , Bridgetown. Re elected 1944, Congress Party CNG , and re elected 1948 55 Barbados Labor Party BLP . Lewis, a Caucasian man, was fired from his job in 1949 for joining the Barbados Labor party, whose members were of African descent. Sir Grantley Adams supported Lewis during the firing with a 1949 demonstration, called the Lewis Demonstration. Lewis broke with Adams in the early 50s, but remained a member of the BLP. In 1956 the Democratic Labor Party DLP was formed and Lewis joined the new party. During the 1956 election, TT Lewis ran as a member of the DLP, and was defeated. Amongst other efforts, Lewis is known for advocating secondary education for all in Barbados. In 1959 Lewis died while in St. Lucia for his daughter s wedding. In 1962 secondary education was guaranteed to all Bajans, after the major 1961 win by the DLP in the Barbados parliament, and the assumption of the duties of Prime Minister by Errol Barrow , DLP.
