distinguish Xanthus Xanthias In Greek mythology , Xanthius lang el was a descendant of Bellerophon , and father of Leucippus mythology Leucippus and an unnamed daughter. Through the wrath of Aphrodite , Leucippus fell in love with his own sister. The passion turned out too strong for him to suppress, so he addressed his mother, imploring her to help him and threatening that he would kill himself if she didn t. She united the girl to Leucippus, and they consorted for a while. But the girl was already betrothed to another man, to whom someone reported the matter. The groom went on to inform Xanthius, without telling him the name of the seducer. Xanthius went straight to his daughter s chamber, where she was together with Leucippus right at the moment. On hearing him enter, she tried to escape, but Xanthius hit her with a dagger, thinking that he was slaying the seducer, and killed her. Leucippus, failing to recognize his father at first, slew him. When the truth was revealed, he had to leave the country and took part in colonization of Crete and the lands in Asia Minor . In search for a new place to settle, he was involved in a military conflict with the native city of Mandrolytus, and besieged it. Leucophrye fell in love with Leucippus and betrayed the city to him. At night, he managed to escape and began to fortify Poemandria. His fortifications, however, were made fun of by the architect Polycritus, who leaped over the ditch in derision. In Greek mythology , Perieres polytonic was a king of Messene , an ancient polis in southern Peloponnese . His parentage and offspring varies across ancient authors in most sources, however, he was a son of Aeolus and Enarete , and husband of Gorgophone , daughter of Perseus . According to Tzetzes , Perieres was a son of Cynortas , king of Sparta , and father of Oebalus , who, in turn, became by Gorgophone father of Tyndareus and Icarius ref John Tzetzes, Scholiast on Lycophron , 511 ref . Apollodorus in his Bibliotheke mentions two different versions of Perieres lineage, without deciding between them he could be a son of Cynortas , husband of Gorgophone and father of Tyndareus, Icarius, Aphareus and Leucippus , or he could be a son of Aeolus and father of only two sons by Gorgophone, Aphareus and Leucippus. In this case Tyndareus and Icarius, along with Hippocoon and Arene , would be sons of Oebalus, son of another Perieres, son of Cynortas, their mother being the nymph Batea ref Pseudo Apollodorus, Bibliotheke , III, 10. ref . Finally, according to Pausanias Gorgophone, the daughter of Perseus, was one of the first women who married twice ref Pausanias, Description of Greece , 2. 15 28 ref . She first married Perieres, king of Messene, son of Aeolus and Enarete, and had by him two sons, Leucippus and Aphareus. After Perieres death she married Oebalus, king of Sparta, son of Cynortas, and had by him Tyndareus, Icarius and Arene, who in turn married Aphareus, his half brother. Finally, in Pausanias account, Hippocoon was Oebalus eldest natural son, his mother being Batea or, according to some Scoliast on Euripides and Homer, Hippocoon mother was called Nicostrate ref Scholiast on Euripides, Orestes 457 ref ref Scholiast on Homer, Iliad II.2.581 ref . Democrates lang el a Pythagoreanism Pythagorean philosopher, concerning whom little is known. A collection of moral maxim philosophy maxims , called the Golden Sentences lang el has come down to us under his name. They are written in the Ionic Greek Ionic dialect, from which some writers have inferred, that they were written at a very early period, whereas others think it more probable that they are the production of the age of Julius Caesar. But nothing can be said with certainty, for want of both external and internal evidence. Some of these sentences are quoted by Stobaeus , and are found in some manuscripts under the name of Democritus . Apollonius of Tyana wrote at least one letter to a Democrates, Epistle 88 . It is possible that the sayings of Democrates all came from an original collection of sayings of Democritus, but other scholars believe that there was a different unknown Democrates whose name became confused with the better known Democritus the Democrates sayings show little sign of Democritean technical vocabulary. ref Taylor, C., The Atomists, Leucippus and Democritus Fragments a Text and Translation .
