  1. Alphabet Game

Notability date April 2009 Unreferenced date April 2009 The Alphabet Game is a car game played to amuse travelers on long car rides. Two or more players can compete. The basic rules are Each player attempts to find the letters of the alphabet, in order, on road signs or nearby buildings. When a player spots the letter, they must call out the letter and the word that starts with it, such as B in Bingo Only one player can use a letter found on a sign, but other players may use other letters on that same sign. A variation to this is once a letter has been found on a sign, no player may use that sign for any other letters. Letters on movable vehicles e.g. trucks or license plates cannot be used. If the driver is playing, signs cannot be used once they have been passed for safety reasons. The first player to find all the letters of the alphabet is the winner. The game is suitable for all ages, and there are two great equalizers the letters J and Q. More skillful players will often race ahead, but with limited instances of the letters J and, particularly Q , leading players often get stuck, giving others time to catch up. This keeps the game interesting for players of different levels. On car rides lasting several hours, variations may be introduced, such as playing in reverse from Z A , giving slower players a handicap e.g. starting at H or disallowing proper names. Other variations include the Hawaiian Alphabet Game , played using only the 12 letters of the Hawaiian language . The Alphabet Game is not easily adapted to other modes of transportation, such as ocean liners, or airplanes because of the lack of surrounding letters. Game Tips As mentioned, the letters J and Q are often the stumbling blocks. The letter J is somewhat more common and random in occurrence. Alphabetic order follows the Latin IPA a b d f h k l m n p r s t w j . The Zaghawa or Beria alphabet , Beria Giray Erfe Zaghawa Writing Marks , is an indigenous alphabet ic script proposed for the Zaghawa language Zaghawa sc aka Beria language of Darfur and Chad . In the 1950s, a Sudanese Zaghawa schoolteacher named Adam Tajir created an alphabet for the Zaghawa language that was based on the clan Livestock branding brand s used for livestock, especially camel s. Sometimes known as the camel alphabet , he copied the inventory of the Arabic script , so the system was not ideal for Zaghawa. In 2000, a Zaghawa veterinarian named Siddick Adam Issa adapted Tajir s script to Zaghawa, which has proven popular in the Zaghawa community. The typography is somewhat unusual in that capital letters have descender s which drop below the baseline of the lower case letters and punctuation, rather than rising above lower case letters as in the Latin alphabet. Beria Giray Erfe is a full alphabet, with independent letters for vowels however, diacritic s are used to mark tone grave accent for falling tone and acute accent for rising tone high, mid, and low tone are unmarked , as well as advanced tongue root vowels a macron derives IPA i e o u from the letters for IPA a . There apparently is no letter for IPA , no a distinction between IPA and IPA r , both of which have been reported for Zaghawa. European numerals and punctuation are used. A preliminary proposal to map the script into Unicode space for future universal computer support was made in 2007.
