The Leonidas Squadron , formally known as 5th Staffel of Kampfgeschwader 200 was a unit which was originally formed to fly the Fieseler Fi 103R Reichenberg , a manned version of the V 1 flying bomb that was never used in combat because Werner Baumbach , the commander of KG 200, and his superiors considered it an unnecessary waste of life and resources, and preferred to use the Mistel bomb instead. However, from 17 April until 20 April 1945 during the Battle of Berlin thirty five pilots of the Leonidas Squadron flew suicide sorties against Soviet bridges over the river Oder with little noticeable effect. History The establishment of a suicide squadron staffel was originally proposed by Otto Skorzeny and Hajo Herrmann . The proposal was supported by noted test pilot Hanna Reitsch . The idea proposed was that Germany would use volunteers as suicide pilots in order to overcome the Allies numerical advantages with their fanatic spirit. The idea had roots in German mythology that was glorified by Nazi propaganda. Hitler was reluctant, but eventually agreed to Reitsch s request to establish and train a suicide attack air unit, with the proviso that it would not be operated in combat without his approval. The new unit, nicknamed the Leonidas Squadron , became part of KG 200. Leonidas of Tarentum Doric Greek lang el was an epigram matist and Lyric poetry lyric poet . He lived in the third century B.C. Leonidas lived in Taranto Tarentum , in the coast of Calabria , then Magna Graecia . Over a hundred of his epigrams are present in the Greek Anthology . The Greek anthology is a collection of poems, mostly epigrams, that span the classical and Byzantine periods of Greek literature. The youth of Leonidas coincided with the first awakening of the Greek cities on the south coast of Italy to the danger threatening them from Rome and their first attempts to seek protection from the warlike kings of Epirus. One of Leonidas earliest extent poems chronicles a journey which he himself took to the court of Neoptolemus, son of Aeacides, seeking promise of protection. Soon after the poet s arrival, Neoptolemus was assassinated by his more warlike cousin, Pyrrhus, who eagerly agreed to become the Greeks champion, and Leonidas returned to Italy to rally his countrymen for war. ref name Wright, F.A 1922 Wright, F.A. Leonidas of Tarentum. The Edinburgh Review. Apr. 1922. ref Although he became quite famous after his death, Leonidas was only able to earn a bare subsistence from his poetry during his lifetime. In one grim poem, he addresses the mice that share his meal tub, reminding them that he needs only one lump of salt and two barley cakes for himself. ref name Wright, F.A 1922 References references External links http www.blackcatpoems.com l leonidas of tarentum.html Poems by Leonidas of Tarentum English translations DEFAULTSORT Leonidas Of Tarentum Category Ancient Tarantines Category 3rd century BC Greek people Category 3rd century BC poets Category Epigrammatists of the Greek Anthology Category Ancient Greek lyric poets Category Doric Greek poets Category Poets of Magna Graecia Category Ancient Epirus Category Pyrrhic War Category ... hu Le nidasz k lt pl Leonidas z Tarentu ru uk ... more details
