The Alberti Cipher was one of the first polyalphabetic cipher s. Leon BattistaAlberti Created in the 15th century 1466 67 , it was the peak of cryptography at that time. Its inventor was Leon BattistaAlberti , an illegitimate son of an Italian nobleman. He was also interested in painting and writing , though he is probably best known for his architecture . He created the cipher after a conversation on the art of print with Leonardo Dati in the gardens of the Apostolic Palace Vatican . Description The Alberti Cipher Disk described by Leon BattistaAlberti in his treatise it De cifris De Cifris embodies the first example of polyalphabetic substitution with mixed alphabets and variable period. This device, called Formula , is made up of two concentric disks, attached by a common pin, which can rotate one with respect to the other. The larger one is called Stabilis stationary or fixed , the smaller one is called Mobilis movable . The circumference of each disk is divided into 24 equal cells. The outer ring contains one uppercase alphabet for plaintext and the inner ring has a lowercase mixed alphabet for cipher text. The outer ring also includes the numbers 1 to 4 for the superencipherment of a codebook containing 336 phrases with assigned numerical values. This is a very effective method of concealing the code numbers, since their equivalents cannot be distinguished from the other garbled letters. The sliding of the alphabets is controlled by key letters included in the body of the cryptogram. File Leandro Alberti De viris illustribus.jpg thumb De viris illustribus 1517 . Leandro Alberti 1479&ndash 1552 was an Italian Dominican Order Dominican historian. Alberti was born and died at Bologna . In his early youth he attracted the attention of the Bolognese rhetorician, Giovanni Garzo , who volunteered to act as his tutor. He entered the Dominican Order in 1493, and after the completion of his philosophical and theological studies was called to Rome by his friend, the Master of the Order of Preachers Master General , Francesco Silvestri . He served him as secretary and socius until the death of Silvestri in 1528. In 1517, he published in six books a treatise on the famous men of his Order. This work has gone through countless editions and been translated into many modern tongues. Besides several lives of the saints, some of which Papebroch embodied in the Acta Sanctorum , and a history of the Madonna di San Luca and the adjoining monastery, he published Bologna, 1514, 1543 a chronicle of his native city Istoria di Bologna, etc. to 1273. It was continued by Lucio Caccianemici to 1279. The fame of Alberti rests chiefly on his Descrizione d Italia Bologna, 1550 a book in which are found many valuable topographical and archaeological observations. Many of the heraldic and historical facts are useless, however, since Alberti followed closely the uncritical work written by Annius of Viterbo on the same subject. Gasparo Alberti also Gaspar de Albertis Gaspare Albertus Gaspar bergomensis Gaspar de padua c. 1485 &ndash c. 1560 was an Italy Italian composer. He was born in Padua , and worked through the ranks at the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore Bergamo Santa Maria Maggiore , in Bergamo , starting as a cleric in 1503, he becoming choir master in 1508 and maestro di cappella magister cappellae by 1525. He was forced to retire in 1550, but was reappointed and worked there until 1559. Alberti was one of the first composers to use a number of new techniques, including the use of cori spezzati and salmi spezzati , especially within the Passion Christianity Passion , where he used it for both the turba and the words of Jesus, or vox Christi . Alberti s Passions were the first to set Jesus words polyphonically. Although he was an early user of these techniques, he is not believed to have originated them or disseminated them significantly. Despite this, he was an important force in Italian sacred music, especially in the period before Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina Palestrina . His book of masses was the first to be published by a single Italian composer.
