  1. Cultural pluralism

About the concept of cultural pluralism other uses of the term Pluralism disambiguation Cultural pluralism is a term used when smaller groups within a larger society maintain their unique cultural identities, and their values and practices are accepted by the wider culture provided they are consistent with the laws and values of the wider society. Cultural pluralism is often confused with Multiculturalism. Multiculturalism lacks the requirement for a dominate culture. One example is the United States which has a relative strong dominate culture which includes strong elements of nationalism, a sporting culture and an artistic culture. In a pluralist culture, unique groups not only co exist side by side, but also consider qualities of other groups as traits worth having in the dominant culture. A successful pluralistic society will place strong expectations of integration on its members rather than expectations assimilation. A society that lacks a strong dominate culture can easily pass practicing cultural pluralism to multiculturalism without any intentional steps being taken by that society. The existence of such institutions and practices are possible if the cultural communities are accepted by the larger society in a pluralist culture and sometimes require the protection of the law. Often the acceptance of a culture may require that the new or minority culture remove some aspects of their culture which is incompatible with the laws or values of the dominate culture. The idea of cultural pluralism in the United States has its roots in the transcendentalist movement and was developed by pragmatist philosophers such as William James and John Dewey , and later thinkers such as Horace Kallen and Randolph Bourne . 1. Polarized pluralism

Unreferenced date September 2007 Polarized pluralism is a description applied to a two party system two party or multi party political system which is seen as overly polarized and therefore as dysfunctional. It was originally described by political philosopher Giovanni Sartori to define a system where moderate views are replaced by polarized views. The phrase was used by analyst Roger Cohen writing in the New York Times to describe American politics about energy, ref name twsNovHaa cite news author Roger Cohen title Energy lessons publisher The New York Times quote Perhaps there s something to treadmill wisdom. We re all so narrow band these days, using the vast resources of broadband to direct ourselves into a chosen ideological and news tunnel. Polarized pluralism defines us. date 2010 11 08 url http www.nytimes.com 2008 06 04 opinion 04iht edcohen.1.13460814.html accessdate 2010 11 08 ref but the phrase is not widely used in mainstream newspapers. In a typical two party system two party or multi party system multi party system, the distribution of party power looks like a normal curve with a slight skew. In such a condition, most of the country is moderate or moderate leaning left wing or right wing. If the country becomes polarized, then the curve becomes one with two main humps and looks like a bimodal distribution , with the power at the far political left and political right right ends, and a severe dip in the middle one side will have more influence than the other, creating a strong trend to follow them. There is speculation that a nation with such a distribution, effectively having two highly separate approaches with no compromise positions in the middle, becomes difficult to govern. An example of polarized pluralism was politics in Germany before the Nazism Nazi era in 1933. Judaism Religious pluralism is a set of religious world views that hold that one s religion is not the sole and exclusive source of truth, and thus recognizes that some level of truth and value exists in other religions.
