File Drechselbank historisch.jpg thumb right upright A pole lathe in a museum in Seiffen, Germany. A pole lathe is a wood turning lathe that uses a long pole as a return spring for a treadle . Pressing the treadle with your foot pulls on a cord that is wrapped around the piece of wood or billet being woodturning turned . The other end of the cord reaches up to the end of a long springy pole. As the action is reciprocating, the work rotates in one direction and then back the other way. Turning is only carried out on the down stroke of the treadle, the spring of the pole only being sufficient to return the treadle to the raised position ready for the next down stroke. Modern pole lathes often replace the springy pole with an elastic bungee cord . ref name BBC, Swatridge cite web title Keeping an ancient craft alive in the Lake District url http news.bbc.co.uk local cumbria hi front page newsid 8720000 8720992.stm publisher BBC Radio Cumbria quote A pole turner, Sue Swatridge, fells trees for the National Trust for Places of Historic Interest or Natural Beauty National Trust date 4 June 2010 format video ref While the action of the pole lathe and the skills required are similar to those employed on a modern power lathe, a requirement is that the timber used on a pole lathe is freshly felled and unseasoned, i.e. green. A geometric lathe was used for making ornamental patterns on the plates used in printing bank notes and postage stamps. It is sometimes called a Guilloch lathe. It was developed early in the nineteenth century when efforts were introduced to combat forgery, and is an adaptation of an ornamental turning lathe. The lathe was able to generate intersecting and interlacing patterns of fine lines in various shapes, which were almost impossible to forge by hand engraving. They were used by many national Mints. The setup shows the drive plate, workpiece and carrier setup between centers on lathe Image Lathedog.jpg thumb Bent tail lathe dog hooked on chuck jaw. Unreferenced date July 2009 A lathe dog , also known as a lathe carrier , is a device that clamps around the workpiece and allows the rotary motion of the machine s spindle to be transmitted to the workpiece. A carrier is most often used when turning between lathe center centers on a Lathe tool lathe , but it may be used on dividing heads or any similar situation. It is used in conjunction with a drive plate and drive pins the plate is mounted directly on the machine spindle as with a Chuck engineering Three jaw chuck and the drive pin is attached to the plate. In use the carrier and workpiece are inserted between centers and the leg of the carrier rests against the drive pin. Carriers may be of the straight leg or bent leg type. The straight leg requires the drive pin, the bent leg fits into a slot machined into the drive plate. The bent leg type is considered safer as there are slightly fewer protruding parts to cause accidents. Spindle Revolutions per minute speed s are reduced when working with carriers, due to the unbalanced nature of the setup. Care must also be taken by the operator when using carriers, as it is easy to get snagged on one. See also Lathe faceplate Mandrel Metalworking navbox machopen Category Lathes ... more details

The lathing may be partial the amount of rotation is not necessarily a full 360 degrees. The point set providing the initial source data can be thought of as a cross section through the object along a plane containing its axis of radial symmetry. The lathe is so named because it produces the same type of object that a real lathe would produce an object that is symmetrical about an axis of rotation. However, unlike objects produced by a real lathe, the object can have an axis of rotation through a hole e.g. a torus . Lathes are very similar to surfaces of revolution. However, lathes are constructed by rotating a curve defined by a set of points instead of a Function mathematics function . Note that this means that lathes can be constructed by rotating closed curves or curves that double back on themselves such as the aforementioned torus , whereas a surface of revolution could not because such curves cannot be described by functions. A micro lathe also styled micro lathe or microlathe is a machine tool used for the complex shaping of metal and other solid materials . Micro lathes are related to full sized Lathe metal lathes but are distinguished by their small size and differing capabilities, application, use, and locations. Sometimes referred to as desktop lathes or table top lathes , micro lathes can be comfortably used in areas where a full sized lathe would be impractical. Micro lathes are well suited for use in restricted spaces where heavy machining or high accuracy are not requirements. Micro lathes find a place in homes, basements, and garages. As they are a popular tool for hobbyists, they are commonly sold through hobby catalogs and hobby websites. Micro lathes are preferred over larger lathes by some professionals, commonly locksmith s, jeweler s, designers , and engineers for prototyping or fabrication metal fabrication work. File CNAM IMG 0609.jpg thumb Mercklein s rose engine, 1780 A rose engine lathe is a specialized kind of geometric lathe . The headstock rocks back and forth with a rocking motion or along the spindle axis in a pumping motion, controlled by a rubber moving against a rosette or cam like pattern mounted on the spindle, while the lathe spindle rotates. Rose engine work can make flower patterns, as well as convoluted, symmetrical, multi lobed organic patterns. The patterns it produces are similar to that of a Spirograph , in metal. No other ornamental lathe can produce these rose patterns. Engine work is easier than a high gloss finish, especially in recessed areas, and is often found inside the casing of expensive watches. It sometimes confused with jewel finishes, a much cheaper process of making swirly marks in metal made by attaching an abrasive pad to a power drill. Jewel finishes used to be common on stereo faceplates and automobile interiors.
