  1. Lateran council

The Lateran councils were ecclesiastical councils or synod s of the Catholic Church held at Rome in the Lateran Palace next to the Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano Lateran Basilica . Ranking as a papal cathedral, this became a much favored place of assembly for ecclesiastical councils both in antiquity 313, 487 and more especially during the Middle Ages . Among these numerous synods the most prominent are five which the tradition of the Roman Catholic Church has classed as ecumenical council s The First Council of the Lateran 1123 followed and confirmed the concordat of Worms . The Second Council of the Lateran 1139 declared clerical marriages invalid, regulated clerical dress, and punished attacks on clerics by excommunication . The Third Council of the Lateran 1179 limited papal electees to the cardinals alone, condemned simony , forbade the promotion of anyone to the episcopate before the age of thirty. The Fourth Council of the Lateran 1215 dealt with transubstantiation , papal primacy and conduct of clergy. It said Jew s and Muslim s should wear a special dress to enable them to be distinguished from Christian s. The Fifth Council of the Lateran 1512&ndash 1517 attempted reform of the Church. A number of non ecumenical councils were held at the Lateran, one of the most significant was the Lateran Council of 649 against Monothelitism . ref CathEncy wstitle Lateran Councils ref References reflist 1911 Category Lateran councils cs Later nsk koncil de Laterankonzil es Concilio de Letr n it Concilio Laterano nl Concilies van Lateranen ja pl Sobory latera skie sh Lateranski koncil fi Lateraanikonsiili sv Laterankoncilierna ...   more details

It ceased to exist in 1970. Pope Gregory XVI 1831 1846 established the Museo Profano Lateranense or Museo Gregoriano Profano in 1844 which was made up of statues, bas relief sculptures and mosaics of the Roman era. It was expanded in 1854 under Pius IX 1846 1878 with the addition of the Museo Pio Cristiano . 1. Lateran Baptistery

Image Lateran baptistery, entrance.jpg thumb 300px The entrance to the Lateran Baptistery. Note the porphyry columns, and the richly carved capitals, bases and entablatures, of Flavian age 1st century . The domed octagonal Lateran Baptistery stands somewhat apart from the Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano , Rome , to which it has become joined by later construction. This baptistery was founded by Pope Sixtus III in 440, perhaps on an earlier structure, for a legend grew up that Constantine the Great had been baptized there and enriched the structure. However it is more likely that if he was baptized it was in the Eastern part of the Roman Empire and possibly by an Arianism Arian bishop. ref Head, Thomas, Medieval Hagiography, p. 93, note, 19 ref This baptistry was for many generations the only baptistery in Rome, and its octagonal structure, centered upon the large octagonal basin for full immersions provided a model for others throughout Italy, and even an iconic motif of illuminated manuscript s, The fountain of Life . Around the central area, where is the basin of the font, an octagon is formed by eight Porphyry geology porphyry columns, with marble Corinthian order Corinthian capital s and entablature of classical form. On the ceiling of the Baptistry is the story of the Battle of the Milvian Bridge 312 . An ambulatory surrounds the font and outer walls form a larger octagon. Attached to one side, towards the Lateran basilica , is a fine porch with two porphyry columns and richly carved capitals, bases and entablatures. 1. Canons Regular of the Lateran

The Canons Regular of the Lateran abbreviated as C.R.L. , formally titled Canons Regular of St. Augustine of the Congregation of the Most Holy Savior at the Lateran is an international religious order of priest Catholic Church priests and Brother Catholic Brothers in the Catholic Church . History These canons regular trace their origins to the reforms in the 4th century of St. Martin of Tours in France and St. Eusebius of Vercelli in Italy of the clergy . These and other bishops sought to model the accepted lifestyles of their clergy in a domestic model, based on the communal pattern followed by the first Christians, as depicted in the Acts of the Apostles . The premier example of this effort was the life and work of the great figure St. Augustine of Hippo , who himself lived as a monk before being called to take up the office of bishop for his North African city. He later wrote a small monastic rule Rule to guide a community of women who wanted to live the monastic ideal. This document became the official guide for the earliest of the religious communities to emerge in the Church in later centuries, in parallel to that of the Rule of St. Benedict . From this comes the title regular, meaning one following a Rule Latin Regula . Under the guidance of Cardinal Hildebrand later to become Pope Gregory VII , the Lateran Synod of 1059 organized and recognized these developing communities and recommended them as the preferred pattern of clergy clerical life , at a time when mandatory celibacy was being made a universal requirement for the clergy of the Roman Church. This congregation traces its roots to three ancient communities The Congregation of the Most Holy Savior was formed in 1419 by the union of the communities of the Canons of St. Mary of Reno in the region of Bologna, Italy Bologna with that of the Canons of St. Ambrose in Gubbio, Italy Gubbio .
