He was also the brother of the more controversial minister, playwright and influential racist Thomas Dixon . A.C. Dixon, as he was popularly known, was born on a plantation near Shelby, North Carolina , on July 6, 1854 to a Baptist preacher.     John Sherwood Dixon better known as Sherwood Dixon June 19, 1896 May 17, 1973 was an US American politician from Illinois , member of the US Democratic Party Democratic Party . Born in Dixon, Illinois Dixon Lee County, Illinois . A veteran of World War I and Illinois National Guard , he was a member of the Illinois Democratic State Central Committee 1938 , a delegate to the 1940 Democratic National Convention 1940 alternate , 1952 Democratic National Convention 1952 and 1956 Democratic National Convention 1965 alternate Democratic National Conventions. He is best known for serving as the List of lieutenant governors of Illinois 36th Lieutenant Governor of Illinois under Governor of Illinois Governor Adlai Stevenson II Adlai Stevenson from January 10, 1949 to January 13, 1953. Although Stevenson initially sought re election in 1952 and won Democratic primary Sherwood himself won a renomination for Lieutenant Governor , he was successfully drafted as a Democratic presidential nominee United States presidential election, 1952 this year losing ultimately to Dwight D. Eisenhower , thus Dixon replaced him as the gubernatorial nominee and went to lose to Republican Party United States Republican candidate William G. Stratton .
