Lloyd C. A. Judge Wells 1924 September 12, 2005 , a Texas Southern University graduate, was the epitome of the American Football League s enlightened policies towards recruiting black athletes. Wells, while he was a sports photographer, accomplished the desegregation of fan seating at amateur and professional events in Houston, and was an advocate for civil rights and for black athletes throughout his life. As a part time scout for the American Football League AFL s Kansas City Chiefs , he convinced Grambling defensive tackle Buck Buchanan to sign with the Chiefs in 1963. He also recruited defensive backs Jim Kearney and Emmitt Thomas , and linebacker Willie Lanier . After becoming pro football s first black full time scout, in a famous babysitting incident in 1965, he managed to get Hall of Fame receiver Otis Taylor American football Otis Taylor Prairie View A&M away from the NFL s Dallas team. Wells success was a catalyst for the older league to try to get up to speed in signing talented Black players in American professional football black players from small colleges, including Historically black colleges and universities as the AFL had done from its inception. He was born in London , and trained as a doctor at University College Hospital . He learned to paint at evening classes at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design St Martin s School of Art . From 1936 to 1945, he worked as a General Practitioner for the Isles of Scilly . After the Second World War he decided to pursue a full time career as an artist. At that time he settled in Newlyn , Cornwall and became closely involved with the renowned artistic community at the nearby town of St. Ives. He was the co founder of the Crypt Group and the Penwith Society of artists . He worked with Barbara Hepworth from 1950 to 1951 and exhibited regularly in London, the provinces and abroad. His work is represented in the Tate Gallery . His works of geometric abstraction were influenced by Naum Gabo Gabo , Ben Nicholson and Barbara Hepworth . He attended Johnstown Academy , and graduated from Union College in 1835. He studied law, was admitted to the bar, and commenced practice in Palmyra, New York Palmyra . He returned to Johnstown and continued the practice of law, was elected judge of Fulton County, New York Fulton County and served from June 1847 until his resignation in December 1851, having been elected to Congress. Wells was elected as a Whig Party United States Whig to the Thirty second Congress March 4, 1851 March 3, 1853 . He declined to be a candidate for reelection in 1852 to the Thirty third Congress, resumed the practice of law and also engaged in literary pursuits.
