Watson August 14, 1924 June 15, 1996 was an African American Democratic Party United States Democratic Party politician who served six terms in the New Jersey General Assembly , where he represented the 15th Legislative District New Jersey 15th Legislative District . Born in Camden, New Jersey , Watson served with the United States Merchant Marine fleet during World War II . In 1970, Watson became the first African American elected to the Board of Chosen Freeholders in Mercer County, New Jersey . In 1977, he became the President of the Board. For 12 years, Watson was a member of the New Jersey State Assembly , where he served as Chairman of the Assembly Appropriations Committee. The John S. Watson Institute for Public Policy located at the Rudolph V. Kuser Mansion on the campus of Thomas Edison State College in Trenton, New Jersey is named in his honor. His daughter Bonnie Watson Coleman now serves in what was once his Assembly seat.     John Odin Wentworth Watson born 25 January 1937 is an Australian politician. He was a Liberal Party of Australia Liberal member of the Australian Senate from 1978 to 2008, representing the state of Tasmania . From July 2005 until he left parliament in June 2008, he was the List of Fathers of the Australian Senate Father of the Senate . Watson was born in Launceston, Tasmania Launceston and educated at the University of Tasmania , where he graduated in economics and accountancy. He was a chartered accountant , company director and lecturer in accountancy before entering politics. Watson was a member of the Coalition Shadow Ministry from 1990 to 1994 but never held ministerial office. He was however one of the Senate s leading experts on taxation and superannuation matters and is highly regarded by his Coalition colleagues. He was expected to announce his retirement at the Australian federal election, 2007 2007 election , but decided to apply for preselection, despite being 70 years of age. On 12 May 2007, Watson was defeated in his bid for preselection after his decision to recontest sparked anger within the party.
