    Colonel John Montgomery c. 1750 1794 was an early American soldier, settler, and explorer. He is credited with founding the city of Clarksville, Tennessee , and the county of Montgomery County, Tennessee is named for him. He was born into a Scottish family which immigrated to Virginia in the 17th century. In 1771, Montgomery first entered the area of the Cumberland River . Much was learned in the expedition, but Indians forced the explorers back to Virginia. In 1775, Montgomery was one of the signers of the Fincastle Resolutions , the earliest statement of armed resistance to the British monarchy British Crown in the American Colonies . During the American Revolutionary War , Montgomery served under George Rogers Clark during his Illinois campaign . Under Clark s orders, Montgomery led an expedition against several Indian tribes to prevent the British from gathering them to attack Kentucky. For the remainder of war, he ran supplies between New Orleans and Clark s army in the north. Montgomery explored the area of the county that bears his name in 1775 while on a hunting expedition with Kasper Mansker . In 1784, Montgomery purchased the land at the confluence of the Cumberland and Red River Tennessee Kentucky Red River s from the North Carolina for 100 British pounds and founded Clarksville.     John Montgomery May 12, 1800 &ndash January 9, 1867 was a merchant, shipbuilder and political figure in New Brunswick . He represented Restigouche in the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick from 1847 to 1865. He was born at Fox Point, Prince Edward Island , the son of Donald Montgomery, who represented Prince County in the assembly for the island, and Nancy Penman. Montgomery was educated there and moved to Dalhousie, New Brunswick , where he was one of the first settlers. He established a shipyard with his brother Hugh the brothers also exported timber and fish. Montgomery married Elizabeth Hamilton in 1834. He was a justice of the peace , a justice for the Inferior Court of Common Pleas, a school board trustee and an officer in the militia, as well as holding various other offices. Montgomery was a member of the Executive Council from 1843 to 1846 and again from 1853 to 1854 and served as surveyor general from 1856 to 1857. A supporter of union with Canada, he was defeated in the 1865 general election. He died in Dalhousie at the age of 66. His son William Montgomery New Brunswick politician William also served in the provincial assembly and his grandson William Scott Montgomery served as the first mayor of Dalhousie. He represented Pennsylvania in the United States House of Representatives U.S. Congress briefly in 1857. John Montgomery was born in Northumberland, Pennsylvania . He studied under a private tutor, and graduated from Washington College now Washington and Jefferson College in Washington, Pennsylvania , in 1824. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1827 and commenced practice in Danville. He was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1855. Montgomery was elected as a Democrat to the 35th United States Congress Thirty fifth Congress and served until his death. He attended the inauguration dinner for James Buchanan President Buchanan at the National Hotel where he was reported to have been deliberately poisoned http politicalgraveyard.com bio montgomery.html along with many other attendees. This incident is now known as National Hotel Disease , and is believed to have been caused by food poisoning related to bad sanitation. He returned home ill, and died at Danville five weeks later.
