The History of England from the Accession of James the Second 1848 is the full title of the five volume work by Thomas Babington Macaulay, 1st Baron Macaulay Lord Macaulay 1800 1859 more generally known as The History of England . It covers the period from 1685 to 1702, encompassing the reign of James II of EnglandJames II , the Glorious Revolution , the coregency of William and Mary , and up to William III of England William III s death. Macaulay s approach to writing the History was innovative for his period. He consciously fused the picturesque, dramatic style of classical historians such as Thucydides and Tacitus with the learned and factual approach of his 18th century precursors such as David Hume Hume , following the plan laid out in his own earlier Essay on History . Reputation The History is famous for its brilliant ringing prose and for its confident, sometimes dogmatic, emphasis on a progressive model of British history. According to this view, England threw off superstition, autocracy and confusion to create a balanced constitution and a forward looking culture combined with freedom of belief and expression. This model of human progress has been called the Whig history Whig interpretation of history . Macaulay s approach has been criticised by later historians for its one sidedness and its complacency. Karl Marx referred to him as a systematic falsifier of history . ref Karl Marx , Das Kapital , ch. 27, p. 877 I quote Macaulay, because as a systematic falsifier of history ... hero William III of England King William III of any responsibility for the Massacre of Glencoe Glencoe massacre . wikisource The History Of England From the Accession of James II References Reflist See also History of England disambiguation External links The History of England from the Accession of James ... etext 2168 Vol II . Richard I of England has been depicted many times in romantic fiction and popular culture. Robin Hood The Scotland Scots philosopher and chronicler John Mair was the first to associate Richard with the Robin Hood legends in his Historia majoris Britannae, tam Angliae quam Scotiae 1521 . In the earliest Robin Hood ballads the only king mentioned is Edward our comely king , most probably Edward II of England Edward II or Edward III of England Edward III . However, Sir Walter Scott s novel Ivanhoe popularised Mair s linking of the Hood legends to Richard s reign, and it was taken up by later novelists and by cinema. Typically Robin is depicted upholding justice in Richard s name against John and his officials during the king s imprisonment. Other literature Richard has appeared frequently in fiction, as a result of the chivalric revival of the Romanticism Romantic era. In 1822, he was the subject of Eleanor Anne Porden s epic poem , C ur de Lion . After Ivanhoe , in which he is depicted as initially adopting the pseudonym of Le Noir Fain ant The Black Sluggard , Sir Walter Scott portrayed Richard in The Talisman 1825 The Talisman , a highly fictionalised treatment of the Third Crusade . The young Richard is also a major character in James Goldman James Goldman s play The Lion in Winter 1966 , which depicts him as homosexual. The Steeple architecture tower still remains but the nave has now been converted to offices. In 1957, the church tower and lower doors were used as the walls of a courtyard for a small Welsh congregational chapel designed by Eustace Button, who designed a number of churches in the area. This small chapel lay across the old church, with the old halls at the rear. The Eustace Button church was low with tip up seats and a wide open span ceiling. The Welsh congregation moved here from the Castle Street area where their chapel had been destroyed during bombing and not rebuilt. The Welsh Congregation closed the chapel in 1988 the adjacent hall was in an appalling state of repair. The Victorian tower and doors were incorporated in the office development and the 1957 chapel and Victorian hall were demolished. commonscat references coord 51.4587 2.5920 display title Use dmy dates date January 2011 DEFAULTSORT St James Presbyterian Church Of England, Bristol Category Former churches in Bristol ... more details
