A table engine is a variety of stationary steam engine where the cylinder is placed on top of a table shaped base, the legs of which stand on the baseplate which locates the crankshaft bearings. The piston rod protrudes from the top of the cylinder and has fixed to it a cross head which runs in slides attached to, and rising from, the cylinder top. Long rods connect the crosshead to the crankshaft, on which is fixed the flywheel. This pattern engine was first introduced by James Sadler in the Portsmouth Block Mills and was house built in that its framing was fixed to the engine house. Henry Maudslay patented an improved version of this a few years later, and other makers adopted the configuration. It was supplied for low speed, low power applications around the first half of the nineteenth century. Engine Arm map The Engine Arm or Birmingham Feeder Arm near Smethwick , West Midlands county West Midlands , England , is a short canal built by Thomas Telford in 1825 to carry water from Rotton Park Reservoir now called Edgbaston Reservoir to the Old Main Line of the BCN Main Line Canal. The nearby Smethwick Engine 1779 was built to pump water from below the six canal lock lock s Smethwick flight at the eastern end of the Smethwick Summit back to the summit level. Another engine at the western end reclaimed water from use at the Spon Lane locks. for the crane mounted on a steam engine locomotive Crane tank An engine crane is a common repair tool used in vehicle repair shops to remove or install gasoline engine gasoline or diesel engine s in small and crowded vehicle engine compartments. It uses a heavy cantilevered support structure to hold the engine in mid air so that the mechanic can carefully connect or disconnect fragile hoses and wires on the engine to the frame of the vehicle. Engine cranes are typically mounted on large casters so than an engine can be lifted straight up out of an engine compartment and then rolled away from the immobile vehicle frame. The engine crane is commonly used in combination with the engine stand so that the removed engine can be rotated in midair to provide access to underside surfaces of the engine.
