  1. 7-day SEC yield

The 7 day SEC yield is a measure of performance in the interest rates of money market mutual funds offered by US mutual fund companies. The calculation is performed as follows Take the net interest income earned by the fund over the last 7 days and subtract 7 days of management fees. Divide that American dollar dollar amount by the average size of the fund s investments over the same 7 days. Multiply by 365 7 to give the 7 day SEC yield. To calculate approximately how much interest one might earn in a money fund account, take the 7 day SEC yield, multiply by the amount invested, divide by the number of days in the year, and then multiply by the number of days in question. This does not take compounding into effect. Examples If one has 1000 invested for 30 days at a 7 day SEC yield of 5 , then 0.05 1000 365 0.137 per day. Multiply by 30 days to yield 4.11 in interest. If one has 1000 invested for 1 year at a 7 day SEC yield of 2 , then 0.02 1000 365 0.05479 per day. Multiply by 365 days to yield 20.00 in interest. 1. Equity-Linked Note

An Equity Linked Note ELN is a debt instrument, usually a bond finance bond , that differs from a standard fixed income security in that the final payout is based on the return of the underlying equity , which can be a single stock, basket of stocks, or an equity index. A typical ELN is principal protected, i.e. the investor is guaranteed to receive 100 of the original amount invested at maturity but receives no interest. Usually, the final payout is the amount invested, times the gain in the underlying stock or index times a note specific participation rate , which can be more or less than 100 . For example, if the underlying equity gains 50 during the investment period and the participation rate is 80 , the investor receives 1.40 dollars for each dollar invested. If the equity remains unchanged or declines, the investor still receives one dollar per dollar invested as long as the issuer does not default finance default . Generally, the participation rate is better in longer maturity notes, since the total amount of interest given up by the investor is higher. Equity linked note can be thought of as a combination of a zero coupon bond and an equity option finance option . Indeed, the issuer of the note usually covers the equity payout liability by purchasing an identical option. In some equity linked notes, the payout structure is more complicated, resembling an exotic option . Equity linked notes are one type of Structured product . Most equity linked notes are not actively traded on the secondary market and are designed to be kept to maturity. However, the issuer or arranger of the notes may offer to buy back the notes. Unlike the maturity payout, the buy back price before maturity may be below the amount invested in first place. 1. Churning (finance)

Churning is the practice of executing trades for an investment account by a salesman or Stock broker broker in order to generate Commission remuneration commission from the account. It is a breach of securities law in many jurisdictions, and it is generally actionable by the account holder for the return of the commissions paid, and any losses occasioned by the broker s choice of stocks. Courts generally look at the turnover of an investment account, or the number of times the investment capital has been re invested during a year. For example, for an actively traded mutual fund, the entire assets of the fund will be involved in buying and selling transactions once every six to twenty four months. In churning cases, the entire assets of the investor are often traded once a month, or even more frequently. As a commission is paid on each trade, commissions can substantially destroy the value of an investment account in a very short period of time. Critics of the practice of paying brokers commissions for managing investment accounts point to churning as one of the indicators that the brokerage system indirectly encourages such behavior by brokers to the detriment of investors . Accounts invested in securities with steady returns and little price fluctuation generate no commissions, and brokers are therefore not encouraged to invest their client s money in such investments.
