  1. Ignace Gelb

Ignace Jay Gelb October 14, 1907, Tarn w Tarnau , Austria Hungary now Tarn w, Poland December 22, 1985, Chicago, Illinois was a Poland Polish United States American ancient history ancient historian and Assyriology Assyriologist who pioneered the scientific study of writing systems . Born in Tarn w , Austria Hungary now Poland , he earned his Doctor of Philosophy PhD from the University of Rome La Sapienza University of Rome in 1929, then went to the University of Chicago where he was a professor of Assyriology until his death. Although writing systems have been studied for centuries by linguistics linguists , Gelb is widely regarded as the first scientific practitioner of the study of scripts, and coined the term grammatology to refer to the study of writing systems. In A Study of Writing 1952 , he suggested that scripts evolve in a single direction, from logogram logographic scripts to syllabary syllabaries to alphabet s. This historical Linguistic typology typology has been criticized as overly simplistic, forcing the data to fit the model and ignoring exceptional cases. Yet, despite more recent refinements of the typology by Peter T. Daniels and others, Gelb s rigorous study of the properties of different kinds of writing system was pioneering and innovative. Gelb believed that the Maya civilization Maya hieroglyphs did not qualify as true writing capable of representing language, which has now been disproven following the decipherment of the Maya script. 1. Ignace Lepp

Ignace Lepp October 11, 1909, Oraj e, P rnu County Oraj e , P rnu County , Estonia May 29, 1966 near Paris ref Eesti kirjanike leksikon, Tallinn Eesti Raamat, 2000, pp. 285 286 in Estonian ref , born John Robert Lepp , was a French writer. Despite his claim to have been the son of a naval captain, born aboard a ship in the Baltic Sea where he was brought up by his mother together with his brother until he was five years old, this is not true. He was in fact the son of T nis Lepp and Anna J rgenson, born in Oraj e village, en H demeeste commune. He was given the names John Robert which were the first names of his godfather John Robert Birk. His godfather s father was indeed a ship s captain, and John Robert Lepp simply claimed his godfather s occupation as that of his father. His parents were farmers, not seagoing people. He gave an incorrect date of birth. He was born on 11 October 1909 and not 26 October that year. At the age of 15, he joined the French Communist Party after reading Maxim Gorki s The Mother , a novel which made a lasting impression on him and led him to abandon individualism as he himself recalls in the nearest we have to an autobiography From Karl Marx to Jesus Christ . Lepp was an atheist and Marxist for many years and claimed to have occupied important positions in the communist party with whom he later became very disillusioned. He then converted to Roman Catholicism and was ordained a Roman Catholic priest priest in 1941. He wrote many non fiction books including some about atheism , religion , and later psychiatry , as he was a psychologist and psychoanalyst . He wrote among other books The Ways of Friendship , The Psychology of Loving , The Authentic ... Metadata see Wikipedia Persondata .
