  1. Hypersonic flight

Refimprove date December 2007 Hypersonic flight is flight through the atmosphere at speeds above about Mach 5.5, a speed where disassociation of air begins to become significant and high heat loads exist. Hypersonic flight has been achieved by the Space Shuttle s orbiter, the Apollo program Apollo Apollo Command Service Module command module , Buran spacecraft Buran and scramjet s. History The V 2 rocket, first used in World War II by the Germans and Operation Paperclip later used by the United States in its early rocketry work , was the first manufactured object to achieve hypersonic flight. In February 1949, its upper stage reached a maximum velocity of 5,150 miles per hour 8,288 kilometers per hour more than five times the speed of sound. The vehicle, however, burned on re entry, and only charred remnants were found. In April 1961, Russian Major Yuri Gagarin became the first human to travel at hypersonic speed, during the world s first piloted orbital flight. Soon after, in May 1961, Alan Shepard became the first American and second person to achieve hypersonic flight when his capsule reentered the atmosphere at a speed above Mach 5 at the end of his suborbital flight over the Atlantic Ocean. In June, Air Force Major Robert White flew the X 15 research airplane at speeds over Mach 5, and broke his own record in November, reaching Mach 6.7. On 22 March 2010 the second successful flight in Australia of hypersonic jet was reported. ref http www.abc.net.au news stories 2010 03 22 2852999.htm?section justin Hypersonic plane passes latest test www.abc.net 22 March 2010 ref Proposed hypersonic aircraft HyperSoar Cancelled hypersonic aircraft Sanger bomber X 20 Dyna Soar Rockwell X 30 National Aerospace Plane See also Scramjet Hypersonic Supersonic transport Lifting body Atmospheric entry References references http naca.central.cranfield.ac.uk reports 1958 naca report 1382.pdf A comparative analysis of the performance of long range hypervelocity vehicles Category Aviation ...   more details

  1. Hypersonic wind tunnel

Image Langley hypersonic wind tunnels.jpg thumb Langley Research Center NASA Langley s Hypersonic Facilities Complex, 1969 A hypersonic wind tunnel is designed to generate a hypersonic flow field in the working section. The speed of these tunnels vary from Mach number Mach 5 to 15. As with supersonic wind tunnels, these types of tunnels must run intermittently with very high pressure ratios when initializing. Since the temperature drops with the expanding flow, the air inside has the chance of becoming liquify liquefied . For that reason, preheating is particularly critical the nozzle may require cooling . High pressure and temperature ratios can be produced with a shock tube . Technological problems There are several technological problems in designing and constructing a hyper velocity wind tunnel supply of high temperatures and pressures for times long enough to perform a measurement reproduction of equilibrium conditions structural damage produced by overheating fast instrumentation power requirements to run the tunnel Simulations of a flow at 5.5 km s, 45 km altitude would require tunnel temperatures of as much as 9000 Kelvin K , and a pressure of 3 gigapascal GPa see Talk Hypersonic wind tunnel Pressure required 3GPa ? discussion . Hot shot wind tunnel One form of HWT is known as a Gun Tunnel or hot shot tunnel up to M 27 , which can be used for analysis of flows past ballistic missiles, space vehicles in atmospheric entry, and plasma physics or heat transfer at high temperatures. It runs intermittently, like other high speed tunnels, but has a very low running time less than a second . The method of operation is based on a high temperature and pressurized gas air or nitrogen produced in an arc chamber, and a near vacuum in the remaining part of the tunnel. 1. HyperSoar

nofootnotes date July 2011 The HyperSoar is a hypersonic aircraft concept designed by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory engineer Preston Carter . It was to be capable of flying at around Mach 12 9200 MPH 14700  km h , allowing it to transit between any two points on the globe in under two hours. The HyperSoar is predicted to be a passenger plane capable of Skip reentry skipping outside the atmosphere to prevent it from overheating and burning up in the atmosphere. A trip from Chicago to Tokyo would take 18 skips or 72 minutes to reach 10,123 kilometers distance apart . To travel from Los Angeles to New York 3,978 kilometers would involve about 5 skips and take 35 minutes. Both flights require a total of about 2,450 kilometers and 27 minutes for take off and landing. So this means that it would take 8 minutes in the air for LA to NY and 45 for Chicago to Tokyo . According to plans, it would use hydrocarbon based engines instead of hydrogen based ones outside the atmosphere, as well as experimental jet engine technology inside it. The project was expected to begin testing by 2010. Status Although reports continued to reference the press releases in 1998 and repeated in 2000 , no development in the project was forthcoming. Although it presaged 2004 s NASA X 43 and the current Boeing X 51 X 51 Waverider scramjet aircraft, the Hypersoar was merely a design concept. As of 2010, Lawrence Livermore still funded primary by the United States Department of Energy DOE was not actively engaged in any hypersonic vehicle design. 1. Background-oriented schlieren technique

Orphan date May 2008 Automatically added by User SoxBot. If this is an error, please contact User Soxred93 Background oriented schlieren BOS is a novel technique for flow visualization of density gradients in fluids using the Gladstone Dale relation between density and refractive index of the fluid. BOS simplifies the visualization process by eliminating the need for the use of expensive mirrors , lasers and knife edges . In its simplest form, BOS makes use of simple background patterns of the form of a randomly generated dot pattern, an inexpensive strobe light source and a high speed digital camera . In its initial stages of implementation, it is mostly being used as a qualitative visualization method. Further research into developing the technique will enable quantitative visualization of fluid flows, in various applications including cryogenic flows, supersonic and hypersonic flows, biomedical device flow visualization etc. See also Schlieren Synthetic schlieren Shadowgraph External links http www.springerlink.com content x73629584517570m 1 Optical density and velocity measurements in cryogenic flows http espace.library.uq.edu.au eserv.php?pid UQ 8810&dsID SreekanthRughuna.pdf 2 Visualization of supersonic flows in shock tunnels, using the Background Oriented Schlieren technique http www.springerlink.com content 2529612236q71278 3 Background Oriented Schlieren for flow visualization in hypersonic impulse facilities Category Fluid dynamics fluiddynamics stub ...   more details
