The NewYork Peace Society was the first peace movement peace society to be established in the United States . It has had several different incarnations, as it has merged into other organizations or dissolved and then been re created. First incarnation 1815 1828 David Low Dodge founded the society in 1815, soon after the end of the War of 1812 . It became an active organization, holding regular weekly meetings, and producing literature which was spread as far as Gibraltar and Malta , describing the horrors of war and advocating pacificism on Christianity Christian grounds. In 1828, the society merged with others in New Hampshire , Maine , and Massachusetts to form the American Peace Society . Student societies such as the Philomathean Society collected their own libraries and augmented the curriculum. Literary and debate societies offered a departure from the learn by rote instruction that prevailed in much of university instruction. The Philomathean Society provided its membership at NYU with a library and augmented student instruction. The University gave the Society its own rooms at the Main University Building. One early lecturer became a very popular figure with the Society. Edgar Allan Poe was a repeated guest of the Philomathean Society and the Eucleian Society , and lived on the Square. Belle Moskowitz . Boston Northeastern University Press, p. 34. ref The Travelers Aid Society s purpose was to provide social work to women traveling alone in order to protect them from moral danger. The TAS NY believed that the greatest threat to female travelers in the early twentieth century was the white slave traffick, defined as the coercion of white women into prostitution and their subsequent sale to procurers or male clients. Agents of the Travelers Aid Society patrolled Grand Central Station and Pennsylvania Station , as well as the city s piers where transatlantic ocean liners docked, looking for women who they identified as vulnerable. Services usually entailed safely escorting women, immigrant and native born alike, to city addresses, other transportation lines, or to a temporary lodging Home, such as the YWCA . ref Baker, Orin.
