Image Europe a history davies cover.jpg right thumb Book cover Europe A History is a narrative history book by Norman Davies . As Davies notes in the Preface, the book contains little that is original. Primary research was rarely required. Twelve chapters span the European past from prehistory till the disintegration of the Soviet Union . The chapters contain almost three hundred so called capsules , texts describing separate terms that often exceeds the specific time frame e.g. Coward, Hatred, Loot or Vorkuta . In the middle part, Davies tries to avoid what he calls the bias of Western Civilization neglect of eastern Europe , in the 20th century part he fights the Allied scheme of history . Davies notes at the end of the preface the book is only one from an almost infinite number of histories of Europe that could be written and that his work is the view of one pair of eyes . Europe and the People Without History is a book by Anthropology anthropologist Eric Wolf . First published in 1982, it focuses on the expansion of Europe an society societies in the Modern Era . It argues that this expansion affected both the societies that Europeans encountered in their expansion and European societies themselves. It asserts that non European peoples were active participants in the progress of history, rather than static, unchanging cultures. The assumption that these others are from unchanging cultures, and are left out of Eurocentric historical narratives is why they are referred to as people without history . The People Without History also refers people whose cultures lack a formally written histories, hindering their inclusion in Western historical narratives. This book discusses three of the modes of production Kin ordered Tributary Capitalist. The issue of modes of production was first addressed by Marx. However Marx was mostly concerned with the Capitalist mode of production . The formation of Europe as a coherent landmass dates to after the breakup of Pangaea , taking place during the Oligocene and completed by the early Neogene period, some 20 million years ago. Pre Pleistocene File LateCretaceousGlobal.jpg thumb Much of the land now forming Europe was submerged during the Cretaceous , 90 million years ago. Alpine orogeny begins as early as the late Mesozoic with the formation of the Alpide belt , some 200 Mya. Even earlier orogenies relevant for the ultimate formation of Europe are the Caledonian orogeny , some 400 Mya and the Variscan orogeny , some 300 Mya. Until the lower Oligocene period, about 32 Mya, the future lands of Europe were an island continent, separated from Asia by a shallow sea, but possessing intermittent land bridge connections to North America via Greenland . Many animal species from the much larger North America colonized Europe during these times. As sea levels changed and sediments accumulated, the sea between Europe and Asia gradually dried out and Europe became a western appendage of the Earth s largest land mass. Pleistocene The Pleistocene epoch lasted from 2.6 million years ago until 12,000 years ago. During this period there were a number of glacial and inter glacial periods. During the glacial periods there were large drops in sea level, so the coast line was greatly modified. The final major cold spell occurred from 25,000 to 18,000 years ago and is known as the Last Glacial Maximum when the Fenno Scandinavian ice sheet covered much of northern Europe while the Alpine ice sheet occupied significant parts of central southern Europe. Unreferenced date December 2009 A History of the German Baptist Brethren in Europe and North America is a book by Martin Grove Brumbaugh , A.M., Ph.D., written in 1899, published by the Brethren Publishing House at Mount Morris, Illinois . On the cover it is referred to only as A History of the Brethren . It was republished in 1961 by L. W. Shultz from North Manchester, Indiana and Carl A. Wagner from Union Road, Clayton, Ohio , printed in February, 1961, and June, 1969. Historical context Throughout 1800s, the Schwarzenau Brethren Brethren were skeptical of histories and record keeping, as they were not to emulate their ancestors, but rather Jesus Christ , the Apostles , and the Early Church. However, by the end of the century enough changes were occurring that the Brethren, having great respect for the Brethren that came before them, were interested in Brethren history. At the German Baptist Brethren Annual Conference year? , a motion was passed approving the writing of a history of the Brethren, however, the motion did not specify an author. Martin Grove Brumbaugh M.G. was the first to complete the task in 1899. His book had great impact, based upon the value of tradition , and the lack of knowledge about Brethren history. Bias Contemporary Brethren historians generally consider this history quite bias ed. Martin Grove Brumbaugh M.G. was a strong advocate for several Progressivism progressive positions, especially education , participation in politics, and reconsidering plain dress , positions which the Brethren had long opposed. These historical positions are not so clear, and sometimes contradicted in M.G. s history.
