HighPerformanceFortran HPF is an extension of Fortran 90 with constructs that support parallel computing , published by the HighPerformanceFortran Forum HPFF . The HPFF was convened and chaired by Ken Kennedy computer scientist Ken Kennedy of Rice University . The first version of the HPF Report was published in 1993. Building on the array syntax introduced in Fortran 90, HPF uses a data parallelism data parallel model of computation to support spreading the work of a single Array data structure array computation over multiple processors. This allows efficient implementation on both SIMD and MIMD style architectures. HPF features included New Fortran statements, such as code FORALL code , and the ability to create pure function code PURE code side effect computer science side effect free procedures Compiler directives for recommended distributions of array data Extrinsic procedure interface for interfacing to non HPF parallel procedures such as those using message passing Additional library routines including environmental inquiry, parallel prefix suffix e.g., prefix sum scan , data scattering, and sorting operations Fortran 95 incorporated several HPF capabilities. In response, the HPFF again convened and published the HPF 2.0 Report. The updated report removed material which was already covered by Fortran 95. The report was also reorganized and revised based on experience with HPF 1.0. While some vendors did incorporate HPF into their compilers in the 1990s, some aspects ... Unsourced date November 2008 A highperformance vehicle is a vehicle generally a automobile car that has been designed with specific performance capabilities, above and beyond those of normal vehicles. Enhancements such as higher engine output power , enhanced brake braking and Suspension vehicle suspension systems, are all hallmarks of highperformance vehicles. A highperformance vehicle generally exceeds the standards and capabilities of more common vehicles, for the purpose of enhancing the driving experience, or increasing the performance of the vehicle for competition. The trade off is usually cost, and maintainability Highperformance vehicles typically cost significantly more than standard ones, and because of the more complex mechanical components, are generally regarded as requiring more maintenance and care. Its editorial mission was to provide support and a critical context for new, innovative and unrecognized work in the arts. During its publication, HighPerformance was a leader in viewing the arts in the larger context of contemporary life, examining how the arts contribute in addressing social and cultural concerns, and also how those concerns impact the arts. In 1994, HighPerformance received the Alternative Press Award for Cultural Coverage from the Utne Reader , and was nominated three other times for the same award. Editors and publishers Linda Frye Burnham served as the magazine s founding editor from 1978 to 1985. Steven Durland was the editor from 1986 to the present. From 1983 to 1995, HighPerformance was published by Astro Artz renamed 18th Street Arts Complex in 1990 . In July 1995, HighPerformance was acquired by Art in the Public Interest API , a new organization formed by Burnham and Durland to research and develop information about artists collaborating with their communities. After a brief hiatus, the magazine renewed publication in early 1996 and published five more issues, but rising costs and an inability to garner needed stabilization funding forced API to cease publication in 1997. Mergeto cloud computing date April 2010 Multiple issues orphan August 2009 date April 2010 HighPerformance Cloud Computing HPC2 is a term coined by Robert L. Clay of Sandia National Laboratories Sandia National Labs to refer to a body of work focused on providing a scalable application Runtime runtime environment based on core notions from Cloud Computing specifically, extreme hardware Fault tolerant system fault tolerance through software applied for use on highperformance machine architectures high cross section bandwidth . Work on HPC2 emerged as a response to the perceived breakdown of several core assumptions in traditional Highperformance computing highperformance computing HPC at extreme scale exascale and beyond . These assumptions include 1. That compute nodes persist for the duration of a job. 2. That the MPI Parallel programming model programming model will scale to arbitrary size. 3. That we can build hardware that is sufficiently reliable to not require fault oblivious software . 4. That capability machines are fundamentally different than capacity machines. These assertions were meant both for rhetoric al purposes & as strictly technical observations. An alternative set of assumptions was offered to replace this set, based on the perception that the first three of the above assumptions were failing as machines and applications Scalability scaled . This alternate set of assumptions include 1. That compute nodes will fail during execution of job, and so will other hardware components. 2. That the MPI cooperative computing model will not scale far enough. 3. That sufficiently reliable hardware is too expensive and impractical at scale. 4. That capability machines of the future may be similar to capacity machines. This fourth assertion was posed as a question. The core notions driving HPC2 are oriented around building an application Run time system runtime system that can scale to arbitrary size, and that is not specific to any one hardware Systems design ... more details
