  1. Jolly balance

Wikify date September 2009 File Jolly balance.jpg right thumb A Jolly balance The Jolly balance is an instrument for the determination of specific gravity specific gravities . It consists essentially of a spring fastened at the top to a movable arm. At the lower end, the spring is provided with two small pans, one suspended beneath the other. The lower pan is kept always immersed to the same depth in water, while the other one hangs in the air. On the upright standard behind the spiral is a mirror on which is engraved or painted a scale of equal parts. The specific gravity of an object, typically a solid, is determined by noting the amount of lengthening of the spring when the object is resting in the upper pan in air w , and the amount when it is in the lower pan and immersed in water w . 1. The Jolly Beggar

The Jolly Beggar also known as The Gaberlunzieman is Child ballad 279. The song s chorus inspired lines in Lord Byron s poem So, we ll go no more a roving . Synopsis A beggar comes over the hills one day, and knocks on the door of a local farmer and asks for a roof for the night. Curiously, he will not accept a bed in the barn, but wishes only to sleep by the kitchen fire. Late at night, the farmer s daughter comes down to lock the kitchen door. The beggar and daughter exchange words, and fall in love. They sleep together, and through some unmentioned premise, the daughter accuses the man of being a nobleman come dressed as a beggar to woo her. He proves to her that he is indeed only a beggar, but she is still upset. Versions Planxty have recorded a version of this song on their Planxty album eponymous 1973 album as The Jolly Beggar .
