  1. Hexene

Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 Hexene is a higher olefin , or alkene with a formula Carbon C sub 6 sub Hydrogen H sub 12 sub . The Hex is derived from the fact that there are 6 carbon atoms in the molecule, while the ene suffix denotes that two carbon atoms are connected via a double bond. There are several isomer s of hexene, depending on the position of the double bond and the branching of the carbon chain. One of the most common industrially useful isomers is 1 Hexene 1 hexene , an alpha olefin . Hexene is used as a comonomer in the production of polythene . Another structural isomer is the bicyclic compound 5 methylenebicyclo 2.2.0 hexene 4 . The o and p isotoluenes isomerise to toluene, a reaction driven by aromatic stabilisation. It is estimated that these compounds are 23 kcal mol less stable. The isomerisation of p isotoluene to toluene takes place at 100 C in benzene with second order reaction bimolecular reaction kinetics by an intermolecular free radical reaction . The intramolecular isomerisation, a 1,3 sigmatropic reaction , is unfavorable because a antarafacial mode is enforced. ref JerryMarch ref Other Dimer chemistry dimer radical reaction products are formed as well. The ortho isomer is found to isomerise at 60 C in benzene, also in a second order reaction. The proposed reaction mechanism is a concerted reaction concerted intermolecular ene reaction . The reaction product is either toluene or a mixture of dimerized ene reaction pro ...   more details

  1. Linear low-density polyethylene

Linear low density polyethylene LLDPE is a substantially linear polymer polyethylene , with significant numbers of short branches, commonly made by copolymerization of ethylene with longer chain olefin s. Linear low density polyethylene differs structurally from conventional low density polyethylene LDPE because of the absence of long chain branching. The linearity of LLDPE results from the different manufacturing processes of LLDPE and LDPE. In general, LLDPE is produced at lower temperatures and pressures by copolymerization of ethylene and such higher alpha olefins as butene , hexene , or octene . The copolymerization process produces an LLDPE polymer that has a narrower molecular weight distribution than conventional LDPE and in combination with the linear structure, significantly different rheological properties. Production and properties The production of LLDPE is initiated by transition metal catalysts, particularly Ziegler or Philips type of catalyst. The actual polymerization process can be done either in solution phase or in gas phase reactors. Usually, octene is the comonomer in solution phase while butene and hexene are copolymerized with ethylene in a gas phase reactor. LLDPE has higher tensile strength and higher impact and puncture resistance than does Low density polyethylene LDPE . It is very flexible and elongates under stress. It can be used to make thinner films, with better environmental stress cracking resistance. It has good resistance to chemicals. It has good electrical properties. However, it is not as easy to process as LDPE, has lower gloss, and narrower range for heat sealer heat sealing . Processing LDPE and LLDPE have unique theoretical or melt flow properties. LLDPE is less shear sensitive because of its narrower molecular weight distribution and shorter chain branching. During a shearing process, such as extrusion, LLDPE remains more viscous and, therefore, harder to process than an LDPE of equivalent melt index. The lower shear sens ...   more details

  1. Stretch wrap

Image Pallet wrapper.jpg right thumb Pallet with corrugated fiberboard boxes being stretch wrapped Stretch wrap or stretch film is a highly stretchable plastic film that is wrapped around items. The elastic recovery keeps the items tightly bound. In contrast, shrink wrap is applied loosely around an item and shrinks tightly with heat. It is frequently used to unitize pallet loads but also may be used for bundling smaller items. Types of stretch film include bundling stretch film, hand stretch film, extended core stretch film, machine stretch film and static dissipative film. Materials The most common stretch wrap material is linear low density polyethylene or LLDPE, which is produced by copolymerization of ethylene with alpha olefins, the most common of which are butene , hexene and octene . The use of higher alpha olefins hexene or octene gives rise to enhanced stretch film characteristics, particularly in respect of elongation at break and puncture resistance . Other types of polyethylene and Polyvinyl chloride PVC can also be used. Many films have about 500 stretch at break but are only stretched to about 100 300 in use. Once stretched, the elastic recovery is used to keep the load tight. These machines offers safety for the products. There are two methods of producing stretch wrap. 1 Blown the resin is melted and blown out, it is air cooled. This is a slower process but provides for higher quality in all the areas listed below. The cost of production is also higher due to the quantity that can be produced per hour. 2 Cast the film is passed over cooling rollers. This makes the cooling process quick. The quality is not as good as blown but more can be produced in an hour lower costs. Other properties such as break strength, cling, clarity, tear resistance, static discharge , etc. are also important. Functions In pallet unitizing, stretch wrap can have several functions improved stability of products or packages, forming a unit load more efficient handling and stor ...   more details

  1. Polymer characterization

refimprove date September 2008 Polymer characterization is the analytical branch of polymer science . The discipline is concerned with the characterization of polymeric materials on a variety of levels. The characterization typically has as a goal to improve the performance of the material which implies that the characterization should ideally also be linked to the parameters that are related to the desirable properties of the material such as strength, impermeability, toughness, optical properties and the like. Chemical structure The chemical structure of many polymers is rather complex because the polymerization reaction does not necessarily produce identical molecules as in the case in the DNA coded synthesis of biopolymers. A polymeric material typically consists of a distribution of molecular sizes and sometimes also of shapes. Chromatography Chromatographic methods like size exclusion chromatography often in combination with Low angle laser light scattering LALLS and or viscometry can be used to determine the molecular weight distribution as well as the degree of long chain branching of a polymer, provided a suitable solvent can be found. Copolymers with short chain branching such as linear low density polyethylene a copolymer of ethylene and a higher alkene such as hexene or octene require a different approach. Analytical Temperature Rising Elution Fractionation ATREF techniques can reveal how the short chain branches are distributed over the various molecular weights. Thermal properties A true workhorse for polymer characterization is thermal analysis , particularly Differential scanning calorimetry . Changes in the compositional and structural parameters of the material usually affect its melting transitions or glass transitions and these in turn can be linked to many performance parameters. For semicrystalline polymers it is an important method to measure crystallinity. Thermogravimetric analysis can also give an indication of polymer thermal stability and ...   more details
