They ran for two years and implicated seventy people. The accused included Francis Stewart, 5th Earl of Bothwell on charges of high treason . History File NorthBerwick witches.jpg 440px left upright thumb The NorthBerwick Witches meet the Devil in the local kirkyard, from a contemporary pamphlet, Newes From Scotland. This was the first major witchcraft persecution in Scotland, and began with a sensational case involving the royal houses of Denmark and Scotland. James I of England King James VI sailed to Copenhagen to marry Anne of Denmark Princess Anne , sister of Christian IV, King of Denmark. During their return to Scotland they experienced terrible storms and had to shelter in Norway for several weeks before continuing. The admiral of the escorting Danish fleet blamed the storm on the wife of a high official in Copenhagen whom he had insulted. Several nobles of the Scottish court were implicated, and witchcraft trials were held in both countries. ref name WME Ankarloo, B., Clark, S. & Monter, E. W. unreferenced date December 2011 NorthBerwick High School is a state funded secondary school located in NorthBerwick , East Lothian , Scotland. History NorthBerwick High School was founded in 1893. Prior to that there were two local schools the Parish School and the Burgh School, the former dating back to 1661. By the 1800s the Parish School was in a building at the corner of School Alley, now Church Road, and the High Street. The Burgh School was just a room, which is now the upper floor of Brian Ferguson, a chemist at the corner of Market Square and the High Street. In 1868 the two schools were merged and in 1876 moved into a new building, which was until recently the NorthBerwick Museum , in School Road. The High School began with just thirteen pupils in what is now the Abbey Church Hall, but later that year the pupils moved into their new premises in Law Road, currently the Community Centre. It was not until 1931 that the High School and the Burgh School combined. In 1940 the secondary school pupils moved into the current building beside the playing fields. The 1940 building forms the front part of the current building with a two storey teaching extension built in 1960. With pupil numbers rising dramatically, Lothian Region agreed to raise the capacity of the school in 1994. Building commenced in late 1996 and was completed in early 1998. The school was further enlarged and refurbished under a Public Private Partnership scheme that was completed in 2005. The school now has a full set of classrooms in all areas of the curriculum , and all rooms are equipped with computers and data projectors. NorthBerwick Branch The NorthBerwick Branch was promoted by the North British Railway to connect NorthBerwick to its North British Railway Main Line Main Line at stnlnk Drem . History In 1846, the North British Railway NBR obtained an Act of Parliament the NorthBerwick Railway Act authorising the construction of a branch line from Drem Junction to NorthBerwick Harbour. The final half mile line of the approved line would have involved substantial embankments carrying the line down to and along the foreshore in order to reach the harbour, and it was soon decided that this expense was not justified. The branch opened as far as a temporary terminus at stnlnk Williamstown East Lothian on 13 August 1849, and the permanent terminus at stnlnk NorthBerwick opened on 17 June 1850. ref name Butt173 Butt 1995 , page 173 ref The temporary Williamstown station closed as soon as NorthBerwick opened, and a small intermediate station at Dirleton railway station Dirleton opened on the same day.
