Though a native of Asia it was transported into Europe and later into North America, supposedly in the straw bedding of Hessian troops during the American Revolution 1775 83 . There are usually two generations a year but may be up to five. In the spring the dark coloured female lays about 250 to 300 reddish eggs on plants, usually where the stems are covered by leaves the larvae feed on the sap and weaken the plants so that they cannot bear grain. The hessian fly was described by Thomas Say in 1817. It is a very harmful insect. It mainly attacks the stem, although if it is really hungry it will eat any part of the plant it can find. In 1836 a severe infestation of Hessian flies resulted in a crop shortage aggravating the financial problems of farmers prior to the Panic of 1837 . ref McGrane, Reginald Charles. 1924, 1965 The Panic of 1837 Some Financial Problems of the Jackson Era. Unreferenced date January 2009 Image Hessian boots PSF .png thumb 300px Hessian boots Hessian IPAc en icon h s n from Hesse in Germany refers to a style of boot that became popular in the 18th century. Initially used as standard issue footwear for the military, especially officers, it would become widely worn by civilians as well. The boots had a low heel, and a semi pointed toe that made them practical for mounted troops as they allowed easy use of stirrups . They reached to the knee and had a decorative tassel at the top of each shaft. The Hessian boot would evolve into the rubber work boots known as Wellington boot wellies and the cowboy boot . When describing the appearance of Jacob Marley Marley s Ghost in A Christmas Carol , Charles Dickens mentions the tassels on his boots, indicating that they were Hessian style. In Chapter 3 of Thackery s Vanity Fair novel Vanity Fair , in a scene set in England during the Napoleonic Wars , Joseph Sedley is described as wearing Hessian boots. In the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta Patience opera Patience , Colonel Calverley sings a song about the military uniform, how impressive it looks, and the effect it has on women. The song specifically mentions Hessian boots When I first put this uniform on, I said, as I looked in the glass, It s one to a million That any civilian My figure and form will surpass. Millions of the vessels were exported throughout Europe, Scandinavia, and the colonies in the Americas . File Pr HE Gemeinschaft.jpg thumb The Royal Prussian and Grand Ducal Hessian State Railways German language German K niglich Preu ische und Gro herzoglich Hessischen Staatseisenbahnen or K.P.u.G.H.St.E. was a state owned network of independent railway divisions in the German states of Prussia and Hesse in the early 20th century. It was not, as sometimes maintained, a single state railway company. On 1 April 1897, the management of the Prussian state railways Royal Prussian State Railways K niglich Preu ische Staatseisenbahnen took over the operations of the Grand Duchy of Hesse State Railways railways within the Grand Duchy of Hesse under the initial name Prussian Hessian Railway Operation and Financial Association Preu isch Hessische Eisenbahnbetriebs und Finanzgemeinschaft . The headquarters of the Eisenbahndirektion railway division Eisenbahndirektion was at Mainz . Hesse could also influence the selection of staff for managerial posts, but engineering and operating procedures followed Prussian regulations alone. All staff wore the Prussian uniform, although the Hessians were allowed to wear a Hessian insignia in addition. The reason for this agreement was firstly the geographical situation of the state of Hesse divided into two regions and tightly interlocked with areas of Prussia and secondly the aim of both states to nationalize the last big private railway company, the Hessian Ludwig Railway Hessische Ludwigsbahn . With 486,318 employees in 1907, Prussian Hessian Railways was the List of German companies by employees in 1907 largest company in the German empire . 1. Upper Hessian Railway Company

The Upper Hessian Railway Company Oberhessische Eisenbahn Gesellschaft was a private concern whose aim was to build and run railway lines in the province of Upper Hesse in the Grand Duchy of Hesse , a state within the German Empire in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Whilst the Main Weser railway had linked Wetterau , a town in the western part of the province of Upper Hesse, to the new mode of transport as early as 1850 1852, much of the area, around the Vogelsberg , remained without any railway connexions for years. Not until 1868 69 was the Upper Hessian Railway Company founded with assistance from the Frankfurt banking house, Erlanger & S hne, and with the financial support of the state of Hesse. It contracted a Belgian company to build routes from the railway hub of Giessen to Gelnhausen Lahn Kinzig railway and Fulda Vogelsbergbahn . On 29 December 1869 services were opened from Giessen to Hungen , on 29 June 1870 to Nidda and on 30 October 1870 to B dingen . The entire route of the Lahn Kinzig railway to Gelnhausen, that comprised a link line of 70 km length along the western perimeter of the Vogelsberg to the Kinzigtalbahn Hesse Kinzigtalbahn , was completed on 30 November 1870. The 106 km long link from Giessen to Fulda ran through the northern foothills of the Vogelsberg, the first section of which was opened to traffic as far as Gr nberg on 29 December 1869. But further construction on the railway was delayed by the Franco Prussian War so that Alsfeld was not reached until 29 July 1870, Lauterbach until 30 October 1870 and Bad Salzschlirf by the end of the same year. The remainder of the Vogelsbergbahn was not completed until 31 July 1871. Twenty eight kilometres of the two routes lay in Kingdom of Prussia Prussian territory. File Ludwigsbahnhof Darmstadt.jpg thumb upright 2.5 Station of Hessische Ludwigsbahn in Darmstadt Early history The Hessian Ludwig Railway was a product of the failed or, more accurately, non existent railway politics in the Grand Duchy of Hesse . 1. Hessian form of an elliptic curve

In geometry , the Hessian curve is a plane curve similar to folium of Descartes . It is named after the German mathematician Otto Hesse . This curve was suggested for application in elliptic curve cryptography , because arithmetic in this curve representation is faster and needs less memory than arithmetic in standard elliptic curves Weierstrass form . ref Cauchy Desbove s Formulae Hessian elliptic Curves and Side Channel Attacks , Marc Joye and Jean Jacques Quisquarter ref Definition Image Hessian curve.svg 300px right thumb An Hessian curve of equation math x 3 y 3 1 0.3xy math Let math K math be a field mathematics field and let E denote an elliptic curve in Weierstrass form over math K math .
