Image Oude Kerk Delft 2.jpg thumb right thumb The leaning tower Image Delft Oude Kerk interieur.jpg thumb Interior of the church The Oude Kerk Old Church , nicknamed Oude Jan Old John , is a Gothic architecture Gothic Protestant Church in the Netherlands Protestant church in the old city center of Delft , the Netherlands . Its most recognizable feature is a 75 meter high brick tower that leans about two meters from the vertical. History The Oude Kerk was founded as St. Bartholomew s Church in the year 1246, on the site of previous churches dating back up to two centuries earlier. The layout followed that of a traditional basilica , with a nave flanked by two smaller aisle s. During it s build the foundations weren t strong enough to support the building, and the church began to lean. As they continued to build the church they tried to compensate its lean on each layer of the tower, but it remains to this day that only the 4 turrets at the top are truly vertical. The tower with its central spire and four corner turrets was added between 1325 50, and dominated the townscape for a century and a half until it was surpassed in height by the Nieuwe Kerk Delft Nieuwe Kerk New Church . It is possible that the course of the adjacent canal had to be shifted slightly to make room for the tower, leaving an unstable foundation that caused the tower to tilt. Jesse 1860 1943 . It was built to replace the nearby Andreaskerk , which had become too small. Construction of the church Plans for building a new church were first considered in 1850. The search for a suitable location for the church began in 1883. The church authorities held a design contest, and about 53 designs were sent in. They chose the design of H.J. Jesse . Construction started in 1885, with the first stone being laid by the Baron Baroness Van Wassenaer van Catwijck. The construction took two years, and the new church was opened in 1887. It is now a state monument. Jesse designed a broad cross shaped church with 1500 seats. The capacity was later extended to 1900 seats. The building consists of two wide, short aisles and a long transept . The church tower is approximately 51 meters high.
