    Herman I died 996 , called Pusillus or the Slender , was the Count Palatine of Lotharingia and of several counties along the Rhine, including Bonngau, Eifelgau, Mieblgau, Zulpichgau, Keldachgau, Alzey and Auelgau, from 945 until his death. He was the son of Erenfried II and Richwara of Zulpichgau. He married Heylwig von Dillingen, daughter of Hucbald II von Dillingen died 909 and Dietbirg of Swabia, mother to Pope Leo IX . Historians have given several nicknames to Heinrich Furiosus the Violent the Insane , because he murdered his wife Monachus the Monk , because he was confined into an abbey for treating his insanity. He married about 1048 Mathilde of Verdun born abt 1025, died July 17, 1060 daughter of Duke Gothelo I, Duke of Lorraine Gozelo of Lotharingia , and sister of pope Stephen IX . He received the Mosellan castle of Cochem from his niece, Richeza of Lotharingia Queen Richeza of Poland. He was elected as successor for the German kingdom during Emperor Henry III, Holy Roman Emperor Heinrich III s illness. Shortly after 1058 , Heinrich began to show signs of insanity, for which he was confined to the abbey of Gorze. He escaped however, when he heard that his wife Mathilde had a love affair with one of his relatives, and killed her with an axe July 17, 1060 . Heinrich then was definitely enclosed into the abbey of Echternach, where he died in 1061 . Herman was born in Freiburg im Breisgau , the oldest son of Berthold I, Duke of Carinthia . He married Judit of Backnang Sulichgau , Countess of Eberstein Calw , who was the founder of Hirsau Abbey . From her, Hermann obtained the right to Baden Baden , which later became the core of the family dominions. Among those lands were the Frankish Albgau and Ufgau . Hermann I and his wife founded the Augustinian monastery of Backnang Abbey . It quickly became dilapidated, and was rebuilt by their son in 1123. Subsequently, the monastery was the resting place for five generations of the margraves of Baden. When Herman s father became duke of Duchy of Carinthia Carinthia in 1061, Herman received the title of Margrave of March of Verona Verona . While he never ruled in Verona, a dependency of Carinthia, the margrave title was to remain with his descendants. He was also count of the Breisgau . In 1073 Hermann separated from his wife, took monastic vows, and became a lay brother in Cluny Abbey , where he died. He is celebrated in the Catholic Church on April 25.
