Herman Russell Branson August 14, 1914 June 26, 1995 was an African American physicist , best known for his research on the alpha helix protein structure, and was also the president of two colleges. Early life Branson received his B.S. from Virginia State College in 1936, and his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Cincinnati , under the direction of Boris Padowski, in 1939. After a stint at Dillard University , he joined Howard University in 1941 as an assistant professor of physics and chemistry. He remained at Howard for 27 years, achieving increasingly important positions, eventually becoming head of the physics department, director of a program in experimental science and mathematics, and working on the Office of Naval Research and Atomic Energy Commission Projects in Physics at Howard University. Clive Ali Chimmo Branson 1907 1944 was an England English artist and poet, and an active communist in the 1930s. A number of his paintings are in the Tate Gallery . He was an active recruiter for the International Brigade , and himself fought in the Spanish Civil War , being captured at Calceite in April 1938. As a prisoner of war he painted and sketched the camp, at the request of the authorities some of this work survives. He married Noreen Branson Noreen Browne in 1931. Born in Rantoul, Illinois , Branson was killed in a racing crash at Ascot Park speedway Ascot Park in Gardena, California along with fellow sprint car driver Dick Atkins. He drove in the United States Automobile Club USAC Championship Car series and also in sprint cars , racing champ cars in the 1956 1966 seasons with 129 starts, including the 1959 1966 Indianapolis 500 races. He finished in the top ten 85 times, with 7 victories. Branson was also the 1959 and 1965 United States Automobile Club USAC Sprint Car Series USAC Sprint Car Series Champion. He was inducted in the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame & Museum National Sprint Car Hall of Fame in 1994.
